To me, it seems a pretty simple and sensible move, Devoti want this to be an international class so it makes sense to establish a way to max their revenues on the boat packages and spares while enabling local sourcing & repair of items most likely to be regularly demanded across all regions where the boats are sailed. You could choose a manufacturer like North or Hyde and say "we have all regions covered" or you can go the other way and get into measuring, certs etc.... If it was me, I'd do the former with say a couple of widely available makers and come to an agreement where customers can buy direct from their local agents and you get a cut, rather than trying to ship sails or repair sales across multiple locations.

Exactly why. Imv the less they restrict the more potential for this class to continue onward and upwards, they should limit the rules to mast & boom length and let development be totally free, any cloth, material, any sail plan. It's going to be difficult enough to improve on what they have, it's an unstayed rig so it'll be a luff curve game and how much leech standout can be supported. There may have to be some sort of restriction on how many sails you can use per event as there would inevitable be strong wind/light wind builds, but that also permits light sailor/heavy sailor options which would open the fleet up a bit more beyond lard boys.. In fact the more I read this the more I keep thinking maybe the Solo isn't such a bad thing after all.. ![]() Edited by iGRF - 06 Sep 13 at 9:00am |

Exactly Graeme- there aren't many classes where you and I could have a good race (extremities of the wind scale replaced with 'pub' naturally). I don't see why this prospective change for the D1 couldn't offer another class to that short, but beautiful list.

It certainly is gaining a good following at Hunts and not just with the oldies! If I had the money for a competitive boat I might be tempted to join them.....

What a load of <insert witty remark>!! Let's break down your reply: 1) It's worked for the Finn and not been a problem, the RS100 although SMOD has several variations of rig...so again the D-One wouldn't have an issue. 2) I would assume like any other class, you can only ever use 1 set per event as per S.I's (with the application to the Race Committee in writing if you damaged your sail) 3) Solo - well it's worked for the them for years as an open sailmaker so why wouldn't it work for the D-One?

Hi all,
I'm new here ..... so, who is the licensed sailmaker? After a variety of Google-searches I can't seem to find Reference to this. The D-1 Rules allow a manufacturer (singular, not plural), but I get the impression that there's different lofts presently producing, and empirical local evidence shows that a gennaker from Poland seems to work more nicely than one from UK. Ben Quote from Class Rules:- G.2 SAIL MANUFACTURE G.2.1 The Sails shall only be produced by a manufacturer licensed by the LIC to the D-One Build Specification. |

Hyde and North iirc... Russ will be along shortly to assure you that the one from Poland was probably sailed by a superior sailor.
