Thanks. So on the tracks from Sailfest it is 'calculating' VMG as the boats proceed. I will look at it all again.

It is a term not unique to sailing, and not uniquely used for the windward (or even leeward) component of speed.
It can mean the component of your SOG toward a waypoint. (Mr Garmin uses it for this, being wind agnostic).
In the case of sailing upwind, some people use it loosely to mean either progress in the current true up wind direction, progress in the 'average' upwind direction, or progress toward the windward mark.

Likewise on a leeward leg it can be used for progress downwind/towards the leeward mark.

It can also be used for progress uptide, or just SOG and COG.

Visibly Massive Grin

Usually a direct result of a great race, a great reach across the bay, some quality post-race 'refreshment' and/or possibly some post race 'stretching' exercises, if your partner is in the mood as well....

either that or a term which may provoke more debate about whether the pole lifts the bow or not, or what constitutes a "bandit" !

And there was me always thinking it meant Vector Made Good. Given the tacks and or gybes combine to make a vector.

Saying "the combination of speed and direction you need to go in to get from point A to point B in the shortest poosible time" every time, rather than VMG, would be a bit long winded.

RS400 atC would appear to have a pretty good real-world translation, especially for dinghies with no instruments.
