There are 3 or 4 Cherubs at Chew, but the club doesn't allow foiling boats (or cats). It would be a shame if they had to move away to sail.

Or to the RS600...

the 600 was mortally wounded by the MPS, the 700 gave it an honourable death.  

Some folks decided to stick some foils on the carcass... this is hardly the same thing as a vibrant, but small development class experimenting with foils and seeing where it might take them.

The Moths seemed to show that the older boats drop out very quickly once foiling becomes significantly faster. When the class was still debating foils, there were claims that the sub-classes for seahuggers and scows would remain strong. That certainly hasn't happened.

Of course the Moth class has since done very well in two countries, but until Bladerider came in and blew a few million of other people's money on doing a brilliant marketing job that really kicked the class along, some of those with an excellent viewpoint and foiling experience were concerned that foils could hurt the class. Whether the class' growth is still resting on investor's hopes is something that good sources give contradictory information about, but the chances for a two-person foiler kicking on do look slim.

The key question for me is whether a foiling boat is a joy to sail.

This is the success of the Moth. The whole package works beautifully on the foils and is a pleasure to sail.

The foiling Cherub would need to move from "technically feasible" to being "a much better boat".
No small challenge.

And I think at the moment the trust is more about semi-foiling to reduce wetted surface. Rather than full foiling.

There was some chat on the forum about changing the spirit of the class and if adopted being the most significant rule change ever. Errr.... the most significant rule change ever is the 2005 rules change that effectively saved the class. And has taken the class from strength to strength. But at the same time really left the Spirt of Cherub behind. I don't see foiling damaging ( other than the Chew SC situation ) for the class. I see it as a very big plus.

I agree- but I don't think it was a straight out of the tin thing for the moths.  It took years and years of amateur and professional time to get the sort of flying performance we see from the latest moths.

This is first step in a development towards a viable two man foiler- I personally enjoyed watching that video for what it is, and what it could offer sailors down the line.  Will it kill the class.... n'ah, too much passion in the cherub fleet for that, they just might need a couple of new category prizes donated by someone like Harken at some point.

Well if there is any class that ought to be trying to foil, surely that's a development class!  Looks fun to me.

Meanhwile, there was supposed to be a Cherub event at Carsington on September 8th.  You asked if you could come and we booked you in to join the annual Charity Regatta.  But there's nothing on the Cherub website.  Anyone planning to come?

seems that Cherub sailors have FAR too much money to burn if they are gonna be putting foiling foils on...let's face it, the foils are gonna cost 3 times the amount of most the boats!
