Fantastic ! Is that one of Mike Cook's Rocket Moths ? Awesome, barely marking the water and zero impression of any speed. The camera person needs to do some panning and blur the back ground. Edit: What is also great is that the shot looks like it is straight out of the camera without any photoshop Edited by boatshed - 17 Aug 13 at 10:49pm |

I had overshot lay line and was trying to get back up to mark, I saved that but then fell in trying to get the kite down

Very nice. However I have never understood why Olympic hopefuls mess about in other classes rather than focus on their own. I don't suppose Sir Chris Hoy spent much time messing about on a BMX in his pursuit of sprint gold in London.

sailing a moth, even a low rider like mine, teaches you a massive amount about boathandling, especially the effect of body weight on steering, trim etc. Those skills are directly transferable to any boat. When I was crewing a 470 I had a contender as my 'training boat'.

One reason might be to stop yourself going stale and keep some enjoyment in the sport. Lets face it, an Olympic campaigner's life is pretty grim: 4 days in the gymn, two days sailing, which is probably as much as anything endless handling, boat speed and tuning exercises... Even if you discount all that a bit of mothing brings in terms of sensitivity and boat awareness (and there's a lot in that too), just getting out there and having some fun for a change must recharge at least some folks batteries and make them better campaigners, and maybe happier people to be around too. |

The Aussies are big on the "go sail lots of stuff" approach- I've seen criticism of the Team GBR approach to 2012 that they were too focused on their class to the exclusion of other experience. |

To be honest I do not feel like I need to go into detail about our campaign. We work very hard to try to qualify for the games but more importantly get a gold medal.
Most of the gold medalists from the London games spent quite a lot of time sailing other classes over the quad I can assure you that if it had anything other than a positive impact we would not sail it or any boat. |

The moth has been a wicked learning experience to be honest. I have learnt a huge amount about rigs, foils, battens etc. Not to mention spending more time on the water, there is only so much time you can spend in your chosen class a year. Otherwise as said you become stale.
Also we had a great day out in weymouth today, 3 sessions with 6 moths on the water at various times of the day; 2 Olympians, 4 European champions, double Olympic Medalist, 2 World champions. Probably learnt more today sailing than I would have sat at home and certainly will be sharper racing the 9er tomorrow.
