I'd rather be an elective member of the RYA than a registrant of some faceless Whitehall department for leisure marine users.

Been a full member since 1984, classed as a gold member, would have thought that with that membership duration, it should really be a platinum membership now.....

As good a place as any. And true, if you ignore the fact that if even only some of those people stay with sailing and join a club, then the clubs benifit. And that there are grants available through the RYA to fund such ventures, so the RYA is paying. And provides loads of support. And trains the trainers.

Wow, I'm sounding like Nessa, now...

The system isn't perfect - it has grown from something designed for a different job - the old YRA - as is often the way with human beings.

yeah sorry for mentioning that chestnut  , death of club racing too dull to consider .

guess we shall all quietly fall into the RYA masterplan of us providing them with a huge training infastructure for little cost to them , infact we can pay for the pleasure .

not place for this i know - .

I seem to remember it cost the amount of membership more to qualify as a non member, didn't it? Can't have been many who didn't join, at least for a year.

Instructors - you could previously do an instructor course and not be a member, but you would just get your G14 signed and not get a certificate.  Now you have to enter your membership number when the yellow card goes off to the RYA and Principals have to check active instructors are members ie you can't revalidate without being a membe.

I guess you are signing up to abide by the rules of a world wide club, so you need to have some connection to that club.

I'm an RYA personal member (a gold one, in fact, as it is simply a length of time thing) and affiliated through club and 3 Class Associations.
