ooching.... not good form, put it the same category as ripping the ass out of a wetsuit for 'over hiking'.... it's just not gentlemanly. With regards the three pumps per wave.... I think it got outlawed just after Noah got back to dry land.

In answer to the chaps question - neither of those is pumping. If you're changing direction you're permitted to trim the hull and the sail to facilitate it.
The next question is, when do changes in direction breach rule 42? That's a trickier one to answer...

Now now, there is a healthy little group of them unfortunately at the 'wrong' end of the country and possibly another winging its way down to our club. Not sure if there actually is a class association per se, I wouldn't join it anyway on principle, class associations are the devils work, I only enlisted in the Alto coven to get a better deal on a spinnaker.. |

Back on topic you're hardly going to work waves without changing direction so they can't make that illegal and moving forward to promote planing, then back once on the wave is hardly oohing, given the argument could be made that you are correcting the attitude of the boat to prevent a nose dive.

Of course there is the puddle and river sailors trick of dropping something into the bottom of the boat and then reacing in to pick it up and then leaning back hard to get the boat level. Very clumsy us puddle sailors we drop things a lot. esp in very light winds.
![]() It is noticeable in some classes more than others!!!! Edited by rogerd - 01 Aug 13 at 12:46pm |

Sponging the water out of a leaky boat is a good one...
As for EPS's, there are now 3 at Whitefriars with people on board who know what they are doing - they give the Phantoms a run for their money... There will probably be another Open Meeting for EPS's next spring, so maybe GRF should pop over and meet them. |

Thanks guys for the (relevant) repnses. Interting this ooooching stuff. So how does that relate to the Rooster Boat Whisper DVD when he says to use your legs locked in the toes straps to lift the bow and stern over waves?

That is totally legal - you are using body weight to lift and depress the bow, whilst still sitting out hard, to play the waves better, keep the boat moving and stop the bow burying.
The thing I wonder about with his videos is the tacking technique - now, I'm a fan of roll tacking, and getting back up to speed quickly (the speed you were going at before you even start to luff) but the Laser techniques do appear to stretch that a long, long way. |

I have often observed a lot of shoelace and burgee checking in light winds. I assume it must be a health and safety thing required in some classes. - lean in to check shoe laces are securely fastened - lean back to ensure burgee is not going to fall on your head - Repeat regularly to ensure safety throughout the race. ![]() |
