My son loves the Feva, really enjoyed his go on a Dart 16, and I think will jump at any chance he gets to sail a new cat from RS. Assuming we don't simply go back to Minorca Sailing after a few years of saving up, I could see a choice between identikit holiday companies being decided by which company had the most exciting looking rotomoulded cats and dinghies. And if the choice was between Topper's range and RS, I suspect RS would win out.

They should convert the Vareo to rotomoulded construction, too, or bring out something similar - that would be fun on holiday, too.

I've had a Feva out solo (with all three sails) in a F3, was rather fun... reckon that's the closest to a roto-Vareo they'll do.

Thank you for your interest in Nonsuch Bay and windsurfing. 

Their are 2 sailing schools at Nonsuch working alongside each other, one for dinghies and keelboats and the other called "40knots" and run privately for windsurfing and kiteboarding. Well I say good on RS for trying to get a piece of the cat market.
In my opinion I think they have brought a level of professionalism and service often not achieved by smaller boat builders. One of the reason I think they have achieved this is down to how they structured themselves and configured the business in terms of ensuring there was suitable support for the level of boat sales done.
If they can do some of what they have done to the dinghy market to cats then go for it. At the end of the day they are a business and that is a potential new growth area from the current range. Who knows if the Cat sells well it could be the start of a bigger range in the future?
I'm not into Cats myself but I will have a good look at the first RS Cat I see.

Boo hiss to RS for copying everyone else's ideas and trying to grab a big chunk of every market segment going.  More class dilution is all.

RS700 = MPS
RS800/900 = 49er (well, close)
RS500 = Buzz & 3000 
RS100 = D1
Terra = Pico
Vision = Magno
Venture = Bahia = Omega = Plastic Stratos
RS Cat = Dart 16 = Topaz 16

With the possible exception of the Vison, I doubt any of the RS "copies" are better than the original (though often they are cheaper after a few years).   

Surprisingly there is no RS take on the Solo, Laser or Phantom .. watch this space!

Remember when RS produced imaginative cutting edge race dinghies?  When the first RS600 and RS300 arrived at our club it was like the Aliens had Landed.  Fantastic.   Even the (now much dissed) Vario was something new and exciting - a single hander with a kite, wow. Most of our laser fleet switched to them over-night!  The 400 and 200 were a bit special too; arguably the 200 was a mite close to the 2000, but subtly so much better a race dinghy than the hefty and under-powered 2k.

Here's hoping they get back on the rails some when soon.

Hey though, should be glad they're still around and making boats at all.  "Other" manufacturers ducked out as soon as new boat sales dropped and haven't made a performance sailcraft for years Wink

I have to disagree with your negativity towards RS here. I say well done to them on producing such a well run and efficient business. I am sure this latest venture is due o requests from the target market of sailing holiday companies and sailing schools.

Without this profitable part of the business then we may well lose the RS200, RS300, RS400 RS500. All classes with a much smaller niche market and a high build cost.

NickA you are also quoting some non-classes in your list above like the Buzz and 300 which are not built anymore. The 800 cannot be said to compete with the 49er and the MPS is more popular than the 700.

It is all good competition and in the end the market will decide.

The 700 was a follow up to the 600. It featured a kite, yes to compete sith the MPS, it also featured other innovative aspects- a pump halyard, adjustable racking (weight eq) and a longer LWL for stability. Hardly a copy, although whether these innovations added anything is another point. The 100 was in discussion long before the rumours of the d1 started circulating- designed to address the performance criticisms of the Vareo, which with respect, was designed as a beach boat, not a racing dinghy, hence it wasn't called the RS100!!!

The RS Cat is a natural extension to their range. Good Luck- nice to see a UK company taking a positive and innovative step into what is clearly a large export opportunity.
