Hi chimp, from experience the centreboard needs glass fibre with epoxy resin to make it strong enough to stand on.
although there are many paints to use on the market the cheap and easy option is car primer that can be sprayed on. It is tough and can buffed up easier than most top coats with the added bonus that when you inevitable need to touch it up its widely available and blends in easily. I was given this tip from an auto sprayer who sails Contenders and it has proven to be right. |

I dont have a huge amount of experience, but if i get a chip in the trailing edge of my centerboard/rudder, i will get a square/triangular file and carve little grooves over the edge of the chip so the epoxy has something to grab onto then tape over one side of the trailing edge, paint tape with a little epoxy then repair with epoxy and either cotton shreds or shredded glass fibre, then once dry, fair it all up and epoxy once adain over the top :) hope this helps.

Hello-I've just bought an elderly contender which has been a little unloved. The centreboard looks like it has been attacked by a crazed axeman-part of the section which sits proud of housing when in the up position is damaged-what would be best to fix? cut out and splice in wood or build up with glass fibre and filler? Also whay would be best to repaint the rudder and centreboard with they look tatty and are a bit flaky!
thanks in advance. (no doubt this will be a regular asking point for me for a while!)
