I have never used it. I got it so I could trapeze whilst not risking the hook on the decks of my precious sideboard.

Why did the system never take off? Seems to me it is safer thean the tradition hook and obviously much better than trashing the side deck and board on a boat.

I had one of those on my Hobie 16 and Hornet. Thought they were very good.
(Especially when the kite went under the bow and the crew had to go on the deck!) |

I think they didn't take off because they are marginally slower to hook on with. But I guess that was / is more down to getting used to it.

Part of the problem was that trapezing very flat (low) has become the norm in the UK in recent years, whereas the Bethwaite systems was designed around the typical trapezing style of many a club sailor down under who typicially trapezed in a more 'standing' manner.
Several people switched over (I remember at least 2 or 3 800 sailors converting) only to find that when they dropped themselves to the knot a small adjustment or bounce over a wave and they got released! |

you may all be interested to know that we are working on an updated model of Julian's original version. this does solve the problem of being at a flater angle, we are sailing with a prototype at the moment and we hope to have some for sale in the near future, we have found that there are many different things that people want from their harness and it has helped a lot to discuss the Options and the early problems with Julian.

that would be especially good for those of us with precious wooden decks. Looking forward to seeing what comes up.
