No Europes around so I went for the 300 in the end.  After my first couple of outings I think I'm going to like it - I will struggle with the lack of weight upwind and it will be a challenge keeping her the right way up in a F5, but but I'm not looking to win the nationals and I think that I'm going to learn a lot in her.

Thanks for all the advice, and test sails and offers of test sails.

Ben

I'm away for the next couple of weekends but after that give my boat a go and see what you think.

On Wednesday evenings you would be in the B handicap along with about a dozen Solos on identical PY. That's a challenge! They are beatable when it's blowing but they do drift very well in the light stuff.

you need to talk to Andy Harris who is the europe sailor at Chew, he would set you up a test sail.  Europes are great boats.
the same, but different...

There is a Europe racing regularly at Chew, so that would provide some direct competition for you. Lots of Solos too obviously, but often they race off their own start.

Anyone got any ideas how the Europe stacks up against a Solo on the water? They have the same handicap so the Solo fleet could provide some competition side by side against a Europe.  Perhaps a less exciting boat than a 300/600 but I guess I'd be a weight for one.

Yeh, most people have the toestraps too long. They actually need to be pretty tight.

a decent set of hikers and they're fine... FWIW I think you need to get the toestraps set up nicely, the boat is quite wide and getting them right will be a personal thing based on leg length and hiking style.

Well, I am nearly persuaded to an RS300 myself, but for the fact I watched one of our chaps out in his last night.  There was a decent breeze, but he seemed to spend an awful lot of the time perched uncomfortably up on the side.  The boat was flat, and it's fair to say he is a touch on the large side, but at no point was he hiking in a comfy looking pose.   So I'm still not sure....

If we still had a fleet of them Steve I would have another one - no question. And I with the right amount of sambuca for Charlie, I'm fairly sure i could have got lilac one on special order...
