Nah I can't resist...

So dear dinghyists, correct me please if I"m wrong, but I would regard that jib as not quite right.

Having said that, it really doesn't matter in the overall sense of this thread which is how or what would make dinghying more popular and there is no doubt to my mind that boats like this would if they were more common.

I think that is the first cut prototype jib. The cut has changed since. The icon jib zips up the forestay, catamaran style. Rig tension is via a lever on the forestay. Jib halyard tension is effectively Cunningham.

absolutely- boatnerdism might appeal to the very technically minded, (and those looking for an excuse) but honestly for sailors who want to turn up, be on the water inside of half an hour and go play a game of sailboat racing, this latest o/t diversion is the classic turn-off type of dialogue we're all guilty of....

I spent 3 hours yesterday tuning my Solo and changing around a few bits.  I still got one bit vitally wrong (i tried pinning the tack to the boom using a splitpin through the boom fitting as supplied by Selden, rather than tying off loosely as recommended by the tuning manual).  The end result is another order from P&B to re-instate a better inhaul system, and that'll clock up to fifty quid before I know it as I'll be snobby and stick with Harken to match the rest of the running gear.  This is with a Solo... god knows what more technical boats demand in time, patience and P&B parts orders once you actually get past the stage of just sailing and want to get them a little more dialled.

Another forum contributor was spotted changing the UJ on his carbon tiller extension... he explained it was the first tenner he'd invested in his boat in 6 years.... I had to smile.

Who's getting in right????

It has become part of the charm and attraction of the what should I call it, pastime perhaps better than sport, of bimbling in the boat park, hours of my time probably even more than forum time and that's saying something.

I know it's pointless, from my days at the top of my game when I wouldn't even waste time on an adjustable outhaul or downhaul system and quietly chuckled at anyone who thought that settings and adjustments would help them to victory, but now it is part and parcel of the activity, hell I've even spent time when it's proper windsurf windy fiddling with some nonesense I couldn't quite get right.

It's the same gene that puts men in their sheds, but I agree it is probably a tad self defeating and certainly not the province of the newcomer, I only do it because my arrogance dictates that I know better than any of you anyway coming from that superior sailing breed as I do..

I've been faffing around with boats since I was old enough to hold a screwdriver - 40 years of trying to make things work better/be nicer to use. Most of it a complete waste of time and money, of course. But generally fun, and sometimes, when it all goes right and you come up with a better mouse-trap, as it were, worthwhile.

not sure what attribute of the icon makes it more conducive to popularity in your view?
Are white hulls eaiser to market right now, like white bathroom suites?
Or is it the snazzy red trim on the sails?
The shape and low freeboard?
Or just the fact that its a superficially simple boat?

I think all these things have been tried, coluours, sail graphics you name it.
The factors listed could be interpreted as 'closer to a sailboard'...

To the average bloke on the street, it probably looks a fairly normal sort of boat.

That jib doesn't look too bad. Easing the cunningham creates luff wrinkles but if you are trying to ensure that the draft is aft, that's no problem. There's plenty of evidence that wrinkles are not a significant drawback IIRC - they are certainly faster than having a pretty sail with the draft in the wrong place.

There's also much less of a gap at the foot than you see in most boards. Boats have known about the endplate effect since the 1930s after all, but empirical evidence indicates that it's not as important as often said. Apart from everything else, the airflow over a boat's deck appears to be pretty dead no matter what.

I know many windsurfers think that they are ahead of boats in development but that is almost always because they are either narrowly focussed on one area of development (normally high winds and open waters) and/or they don't know enough about boats to know that boats have done the same things years before. For example years ago one windsurfing mag did a piece on how boards were ahead of boats in development and they came up with crap like saying that boards had developed pocket luffs earlier (wrong, pocket luffs were used even at my old Moth club in the '60s) and got into monofilm earlier (wrong, mylar sails were used in boats before windsurfers were invented).

Er actually I thought it was over sheeted, the clew too high, the leading edge sagging and would really benefit by a bit more overlap, nothing to do with windsurfing.

Windsurfing did march ahead a bit in the eighties and nineties, but I'm prepared to accept not much has gone on in sailboard development in recent years and in some areas, some folk have caught up, I still reckon I've got a faster sail that would make those stick insects go a bit faster but that's just semantics.

But as so often is the case, 'they' get stuff nearly right but not quite and having gone through the mill of trying to get something built I now fully understand why things are the way they are because of the whole disjointed nature of no single entity doing the whole thing and them inevitably being a clusterf**k of all mannner of input.
