On my 470s we had a system for tensioning the jib luff. It involved sending the helm down the foredeck to re-tie the string a bit tighter. (helm because us crews were deemed too heavy, so it was a job for the midget at the back) |

So, another useless control from a bygone era by the sound of it, why you would need to vary the jib tack I don't know, every boat I've had, fixes the tack as low as possible (the foot of the jib should be as close to the deck - end plate effect- look it up, as possible, then tensions independently from the forestay, at least the 500 and the Alto did, I can't remember what the L3k had going on, but certainly nothing that fits the description.
However a jib kicker I experimented with on the V 2 setup, don't think I'd bother with that again either and as it is with that carbon I14 chute thing raising the foot, it would need to be recessed as I see it. We're way off topic, if I get the green light, I'll start a 'Psycon' thread and would be perfectly open to share what could be a frankenboat with a future for more than me judging by the back channel interest and encouragement I've had. Jib sliding up and down forestay on Cunningham and halyard means you can accommodate a decent rake range even on a single clew position.
That particular boat has the big gaping wizards sleeve as a retrofit to make getting 35m2 kites in a bit easier. The jibs are sheeted reasonably broad so don't interfere with it despite the fact it's proud of the deck. |

Nope, don't get that either, a)what particular boat, b)why would you want to rake the jib, it's already raked (or should be) so it's foot is slammed to the floor, is this about boats where the jib halyard and forestay are one in the same thing? |

It's an international 14 - I sailed the very boat about a month ago, it's just gone on the market for £5500 having just done 3rd at the nationals.
I probably wasn't clear - you rake the mast, not the jib, however raking the mast affects the fore triangle geometry, so if you go back your once perfectly set jib will now be really loose and twisty even when sheeted hard, and if you rake forward the jib leech will be shut whilst the foot is all deep on max sheet, so a degree of up/down can ameliorate that, and also the fact that it isn't a supplied one design so any one boat will see a large number of different jibs in its time. It isn't a boat where halyard and forestay are one thing - there is a rule reqt for the sails to be capable of lowering at sea. Cheers Toby - bit of a heartbreaker but hadn't expected to get that far up. Nearly 3h long race. Made up for it with a cheeky bullet on the last day. Edited by Daniel Holman - 03 Jul 13 at 10:09pm |

Ah, yes I get it, the jib on the Alto has a clew plate and three positions that I always assumed was to correct that issue. I also wondered why more use of clew battens isn't made with jibs, to make better use of the bottom end of the triangle, then again I also thought that the reason y'all rake your rigs is for depower anyway, so opening the jib leech would be part of that, but you wouldn't want to have any sag in the forestay, so thanks I get it now, not that it'll be a problem for a boat like an icon, they've barely got a functioning jib as it is, the way it appears to be sheeted in some of their pics..
