I think in sailing generally, people race too much, and practice too little... People often even get coaching, and given feedback, but you can't hope to properly implement that feedback in a race scenario. To get something bedded in, you need to repeat the action many times more than you will do in a days worth of racing.
It's not easy... Often coaching will be in different conditions, or a different venue even, which means you can't apply the feedback the next time you get on the water - too much/not enough wind, no/big waves, inland/sea... By the time those conditions exist again, it's been 1/2/3/4 weeks since the training.

Being a coach is great. Whether it's working with kids who have lots to learn and come on in leaps and bounds, or giving little bits of input to adults who then have that eureka moment when they change a tiny thing and make a great leap forward. with the former it's about basic explanation, technique and practice, with the latter it's about observation of the small things, noticing the detail, soemtimes even the mindset, and being able to work your sailor into a new pattern or habit. Amazingly rewarding.
I am always surprised that more clubs don't offer adult coaching. I wonder if there is a fear factor on the part of the coach who worries about having their suggestions knocked back, or about not being able to make the differnece, but I think it's more about the mindset that says that sort of thing is not done. We don't do adult coaching because we don't do adult coaching, that sort of thing. My experience is that if you offer it, some people will come, often those who have just learned the basics, more rarely those who have been racing a while and who know they are getting stale. The thing is, it doesn't matter how many come, just so long as you approach the few with enthusiasm and energy and no bullsh*t. Finding fault where none exists is a recipe for disaster and will quickly show your shortcomings. Spottings oemthing going awry, even as simple as the wat someone holds the tiller or sits in a boat can unlock all sorts of potential. Most people willgo away feeling better just for the time on the water and the encouragement. Give it a try. |

Boat trim is the most obvious thing a coach can put right, I think. "Sit forwards" has probably been one of my most used phrases over the years. Far easier to see from the outside.
So, dinghies are now more popular because people are being guided to the right boat for them, they are getting decent coaching, which they are enthused by, and therefore go out after and practice, before joining back in with club or class racing, and find they have jumped from the back to mid fleet. Or maybe not. Maybe they have bought the boat that they saw at the Southampton boat show, having just done a level 2 course at a centre, or on holiday, sold by the nice young man in the smart polo shirt, that lives on the drive on the well balanced trailer that they bought with it. Not interested in joining a club, or racing at all, they use the boat to potter around in for 1 week of holiday and the 3 nice weekends in the summer, 2 kids in the front with fishing nets on sticks, jib never unfurled, tiller extension never used, everybody having a lovely time out on the water in their collared bouyancy aids. Seems more likely for the majority. |
