not really true- there's quite a few Team 15 clubs around the country who are primarily racing focused- ideally on techno 293s. Wasn't the 293 one of the biggest fleets at the ISAF Youth Worlds??? If you think dinghy races drop off after uni, then look to windsurfing for some reassuring respite from the gloom of this thread. The person responsible for championing windsurfing in the RYA was made redundant recently. I guess the echelons of power see no (competitive) future in windsurfing either. The natural progression from team 15 seems to be either freestyle (fine if you ski bum your way through your 20s) or in some cases, slalom- using very inaccessible kit, although de-tuned slalom kit is very popular- I own one and would consider myself an intermediate at best freeride windsurfer. Hardly anyone races longboards anymore, and having borrowed one of Graeme's I can see why.... what a horrible, horrible way to spend time on the water.... honestly it made my Solo feel tidy, tight and less awkward than it really is. I for one wish there was an adult Windsurfing racing circuit similar to what the kids have with the Techno. I would like to try Windsurfing racing but not on longboards and not on slalom kit. You can get an 8.5m rig for the Techno and I believe adults race with it on the continent but I've never see it in the UK
For now I'll stick with my Laser for one-design racing.

Seriously? The Techno? Windsurfings equivalent of the Topper only more unpleasant to sail.
I can understand Jimbo or anyone else's reticence toward the longboard, they are not the easiest ride, could be described as windsurfings equivalent of the MPS, but once mastered they can at least be used in all conditions from 0 to 35 knots and more, they could, should in fact be used more widely in clubs round cans. The most prolific class in the world is the Kona, it's not a difficult board to sail but like anything you race, you need another gear. which comes from lots of time on the water and many races at the back if you try as a newcomer to both windsurfing and racing. Most windsurfers don't race it went out of fashion a long long time ago and has only recently been revived by the kids but they hit 15 get dropped and go away never to be seen again. Racing Boards is exactly like racing dinghies and the same rules apply, so short squat things just don't go upwind unless it is so windy the rescue boats don't want to launch, so the rest of the time you are schlogging around on this undervolumed coracle with a small centreboard an oversize rig making all sorts of leeway and buggering up your lay line transits for when you get on a proper board/boat (hence why most kids can be pretty much guaranteed to over stand the mark.). I was only chatting about this to Mike Lyons yesterday and he's also convince a decent board rig combo could come along and re vitalise the sport at club level if it was an accessible outfit and reasonably priced. |

I don't think so, the serious money is in AC and Volvo RTW racing; I wouldn't call those "tedious doggy old leadmines" Just look at the number of top 49er skippers who are in the key roles in the AC making rumoured very healthy 6 figure salaries.

NP seems to have effectively dropped marketing the RS:One to the UK. That was new kit, all in for just a smidgen over two grand. I showed some initial interest (as an alternative to trying to race a Kona) but to be honest I realised it was never going to be the way forward to race boards against dinghies. I think one of the guys from rutland took a Serenity around the course in lightwinds.... there's a video on you tube somewhere. Although that board's been discontinued now anyway, so it kind of says that the market's just not there, not here anyway. Wind bends through the Petronas twin towers over a chlorinated architectural water feature maybe, puddle in Herefordshire in seven degrees air temp and BF1.... erm, no.

Really? I'll bow to your superior knowledge. Someone better tell the Techno class who advertises itself as the biggest Windsurf class, or are you talking sales rather than competitors (which is what I'm more interested in).
Personally I'd rather sail something that might be a bit of dog against 50 other dogs, than faff about in a handicap fleet (sailing or windsurfing).
I think I understand your frustration, maybe its people like me that are holding back board and dinghy development but I just want to have fun, and for me that is racing in a fleet.

Well yesterday I went to have a look at exactly the sort of thing modern folk should be pointed at, it's an Icon hull I'm thinking of butchering into something a tad more sporty, but if you've never seen one which chances are most haven't, it is just the last word in simple clean lines, is light has all those attributes like wash through deck, easy on the thighs seating not to mention a very nice clean under hull. Two folk can pick it up easily and it's quick enough to deliver the sensation, at least it will be if I get my way and butcher a kite onto it.
So why are they not already selling in droves? Answer me that question. |

Because people like to race against others; a bit catch 22 which is why it is not easy to launch a new class. That said I agree the iCon looks fantastic.

what you probably need to do is to get some wings on it for extra freeboard and righting moment I'd recommend an unstayed carbon mast so you've got the option to unarig it on short reaches dump the jib, you won't need it oh yes, keep the builder the same as the iCon so they understand the tooling, apparently they're quite good anyway, so no repeats of fred in a shed with a V-Twin and spiralling cost base. I tell you what, do all of that and maybe the builder would see there's a gap in the market for a singlehanded, asymmetric hiking boat.

There's a myriad of reasons why they won't sell in droves now... - the economy - lack of a class circuit - lack of local fleets - price, why buy a new Icon when you can get an old N12/Graduate for literally nothing? - the lack of a kite and the perception this has - the addition of a dangly pole, I'm sure it's good, but really??? - the lack of faith in new dinghy developments All of the above will not phase the well-heeled, early adopter. Unfortunately dinghydom don't have so many of them guys kicking around. That said, there's going to be one very, very good reason not to buy one in about 18 months... but, mate, seriously, the Icon... did you see the video of Fuller on Youtube in one? nasty, nasty boat.
