There are over 160 people registered for the 2013 Contender Worlds already, a few more than there were at Weymouth in 2011. They seem these days to be able to get that sort of turn out for N European Worlds with some consistency. That's pretty impressive for a boat that's over 40 years old, and certainly suggests that quite a lot of people are convinced, even in under 20knts.

The Contender has been around a long time and as such has built up a big install base of owners who turn out for big events. It is probably the single handed version of the 505 and is a "proper" international class unlike these pseudo ISAF classes that get their numbers up by shipping boats to sailing schools. The class is raced internationally and if you win a Contender Worlds you are a proud man (or woman). Having been around a long time is a benefit if you want a big turn out as you have lots of boats to pull from ... but the boat is starting to look a bit dated but clearly many don't mind that. The RS600 could have been the replacement but I think RS killed that with the 700 as lots of 600 sailors jumped to 700s but the 700 has not fared as well against the Musto Skiff. |

To me it looks like the Tera gybes onto S, so must initially give room for laser to keep clear, while Laser does seem to respond and make attempts to keep clear. Its hard to tell from that angle but at some point they must hit the 3 BL zone at which point the Laser gets mark room. Tera fails to give mark room, Tera loses the protest.

Not sure where you are seeing any response from the Laser? I agree that it does look like the Tera gybes too close, but there is no response to the gybe at all, so actually hard to call. Initially the laser is also very close when overlapping to leeward. Agree ref mark woom.

Was it a pursuit or was she right up there with the Lasers?
What struck me was that there was surprisingly little rocking going on for a fleet of Lasers. Are the Mark Cams keeping them on the straight and narrow? |

Separate start times Rupert- but not by much- Rebecca's done well to hold those Lasers for effectively an entire lap.
The mark cam was installed for a laugh before the start, the 'incident' filmed here was a giggle, egged on by one of the other Laser sailors. It's quite refreshing actually... I'd normally think you could stick a lump of coal up a Laser sailor's arse and you'd have a diamond in a week, but not true with our lot. They're all just having some fun on the water, not 'cheating' by rocking away like some Kiss power ballad. Both Rebecca and Rob both do a turn- if only to acknowledge a fantastic bit of on-the-water banter that had just occurred; it was the talk of the changing room- everyone pissing themselves over it. Good fun- between fleets, but more importantly between friends, that aren't even technically racing each other. Happy Days- good vibe at Draycote currently, hope some of you will come and join us at the Dash later this year.
