The understanding of paracitic drag (even if not the name) must pre-date aeroplanes by rather a long way - sailing ships have been choosing the right size sails for a long, long, time, and it doesn't take an aeronautical engineer (or any other sort) to work out thsat a sail with part of it flapping is slower than a smaller one filling properly. It simply takes observation. The important bit, as GRF says, is working out whether having the extra drag in one direction is worth it for the extra area in another.

Which brings us neatly back to why the 8.4 rig is proving more popular in the 100 - no need for the paracitic drag up wind when you can hoist another sail going down.

Welcome back GRF .... Wiki Sail was missing you .... I don't know who this other guy is but who does he think he is .... trying to introduce real science on a forum designed to be the altar of all knowledge according GRF - the great god of sailing opinion and self defined science. PLEASE, PLEASE don't let scientific fact get in the way of great banter .... the world is a better place when based on opinion over fact ... can't imagine Einstein was a great party host or created so much contention .... WiKi Sail Roools LOL

By the way how many rigs do the RS100's really have and why doesn't the 10.2 rig have a bigger kite as well  Ouch

officially - 2
unofficially - 3
on the grapevine / rumour mill - 4

why does the 10.2 not have a bigger kite?  It does... you take your 10.2 that no one sails anymore and trade it in for an MPS, 700 or D1... boom, you have a bigger kite, and it comes with people to sail against too.  LOL

Yes, yellowwelly has appeared on the windsurfing forum in an attempted revenge attack on my peers, unfortunately most of whom have buggered off kite surfing or in the case of the awkwardly effeminate possibly canadian - stand up paddle boarding

The moniker 'PondMonkey' didn't seem to do it for him, since lots of them sail on ponds er rather like monkeys, so rather than be just another, he changed to yellowwelly since one of them, ironically a well known cross dresser has formed an attachment to him and is constantly berating his sitting down habit.

Oh and just a bit of news for you Scotsfin, I'm currently contemplating turning my attention to that neutered boat you ride and giving it some balls, if I can convince my crew to ante up some cash and relieve your spinnakerphobic pal of that proto they've got rotting in their yard..

Thought you'd be interested, your class about to get some.. well class I guess and a bit of performance to boot.

Thank me later.
