As a follow on to that, if you can win without flying the kite why bother with one at all !!

Huw won the event with a day to spare sailing using an 8.4 rig. He subsequently used the spare day to record the only 10.2 rig results of the event thereby making him the 10.2 Champ. Having a bit of a laugh (I'm guessing) rather than adding to the confusion.

I think it's an 'in-joke' kinda thing Charlie... I'm just not sure who will be having the last laugh.

Maybe he just showed that getting too involved with the difference between the two rigs is missing the point?
I think everyone in our club would have welcomed a +20% sail area option on Sunday, particularly the race team waiting for us to struggle over the tide.

I couldn't agree more, however the class obviously thinks differently as they have chosen to split the fleet... any way, old news, same ground... there's at least some positives from the split, hopefully leading to less confusion in the longer term. Maybe more 10.2s will show for their first World Champs in Como in September and the Nationals in Hayling later this year.... if not, anyone got a boat I can borrow? I've always fancied being a World Champion in an ISAF approved class.... I'd only need to start one race and sail ashore, it'd be in the bag.

James I doubt the new rule will be ratified before the World Championships in October. So it will depend on what is written into the NOR & SIs for the actual event.
Now if you want to be World Champion in a class of one go for it.
Looking at the Europeans a previous regular 10.2 sailor won using a 8.4 rig. So the top sailor still showed that they were the best regardless of rig. It was however a windy event and I guess Como will also be expected to be windy so if form is anything to go by then there will be mostly 8.4 rigs sailing.

If you check the ISAF record for the RS100 (single class) it actually lists the 10.2 as the mainsail area... obviously with the class concentrating towards to the smaller sail (in the UK at least) someone needs to update the site.... and it also would indicate that if ISAF looked at it, the proposed rule change could/should be vetoed anyway as it may invalidate their ISAF status, assuming of course, the requisite numbers and criteria were met with the combined sales of both rigs.

Ah ... so in fact they shouldn't be hosting a world championships for the 8.4 then as only the 10.2 has ISAF staus ...

no, currently the 'RS100' has ISAF status.
The RS100 can be raced with either an 8.4 or 10.2 sail*. As I understand it, the SIs prevent rig switching within a regatta, although this is unlikely to be enforced due to RRS 101- the 'cock factor' of protesting someone switching. No doubt, this can also apply to anyone telling a 7.x sailor to sod off from an event too. If the PRO/CA wants to award 'category' prizes and this gets more media coverage and the reports get slanted towards two sets of results, then you may get a 10.2 'winner', an 8.4 'winner' and a whole load of external & internal confusion about who's racing who. But there is only one winner- just like at the first Nationals, where Neal Freeman won. He sailed an 8.4 sail... that's nice, good for him, rig size? ...whatever; he won & choose the right tool for the job then. Hiked his arse off too... The proposed rule change aims to split the fleet into two classes- this is being driven by the 8.4 sailors who want 'proper one-design racing'. Maybe it's the right decision long term, who knows... however if the rule change does go through, then yes, technically, I think it would question the legitimacy of the World Championship title later this year. But at present, no, the World Champs are good to go (no doubt with some confusing reportage to follow) (*7.x is an accessory, not class legal for racing).
