Interesting point Russ. Personally I'd be OK with someone using the 7.4 rig as long as they didn't get a fiddled handicap allowance. I'm around 10.5 stones. If I bought a Finn and used a cut down sail when it's windy no-one would give me a handicap allowance. They'd quite rightly say "more fool you for buying a boat you're far too light for".
Best wishes from deep in the woods

Look at the clew area of the sail, they have black or white swooshes. Hard to differentiate

I think if a 7.4 turned up at a winter hcap it should be given its own hcap it's a different class a la laser 4.7 (it just hasn't had enough returns yet, bit like D1 and Icon etc etc ). It's got nothing to so with cut down sails.

One's a lot smaller and clearly much slower, therefore worthy of splitting the 9 boat fleet over....

Can't you tell which one from the photo???

The white one looks smaller but they are all in front, that's making the most of the extra power in light winds!

Frankenboat?! You're going to give my poor little dinghy a complex.

Neptune: Black is 10.2, white is 8.4 and pink is 7.4.

Nothing like the same, it's not recognised in its own class rules is it? ? Therefore not legal. RS have even said its a training sail. So it's the same as turning up with a rooster 8.1 in a drifter and asking for the laser handicap. Lol

This is where I get confused by RRS78.1.

Portsmouth Yardstick is a red herring. There's no requirement in PYS for a boat to have a published number. Its simply up to the RC to allocate one after being informed as to the boat's specification.

RRS 78.1 is basically down to competitors to protest if they feel its breached. But what isn't clear to me is if, when and how a boat can stop being a member of its original class and no longer have class rules to be applicable. It seems to me likely that a protest of a Laser under RRS78.1 for using a replica sail should succeed in any race.
However in the US there are people who chop up old Lasers, put Moth rigs on them and race them as "Classic" Moths. It hardly seems credible that a protest against such a boat under RRS78.1 for not complying with the Laser rules should succeed.
In between those two is a whole, to me gray area, which encompasses Rooster 8whatsits, experimental sails, this new RS100 training sail and lots more.
