So if the racing is getting closer, as you claim, why the need for the split in the fleet? Surely that's a fallacy by definition?
And sorry no, a boat, any boat, which derives its top performance credentials from a blinking big kite (relative to the mainsail) will not be as competitive as a unarig around the cans if it can't get the kite up on the reaches. No way a 100 will plane upwind- it is marginally quicker than a Laser IMHO. (Some felt differently though). As for unarig off wind... M'eh, the 8.4 is a slouch, the 10.2 has nothing on a phantom or 300. One trick pony.... But glad you're enjoying the donkey ride, the world would dull if we always all agreed. |

Why does the fact it doesn't plane upwind go against its competitiveness around the cans. I thought that would make racing tighter f it doesn't plane uphill. That's why bosuns and larks are used for team racing. A lot can be lost in a 100 upwind. Totally agree the big gains can be made downhill but a lot can be lost if you have a bad beat.
At the end of the day if your happy plodding round in tubs but close to your buddies swapping places then yes a solos great but I personally like a little adrenalin in my sailing which the flipping big kite gives me :). As you say thank goodness were all different. |

Keith - I'm just hilighting the bi-polar performance variation, thus significantly making whether it's on handicap or not so course dependent. This isn't so much of an issue with say the MPS or B14 - both of these plane upwind- their performance windows are tighter so in theory, will have a less course dependent PN, for asymmetric dinghies anyway.
I'm only repeating old news- we've all felt the 100 would benefit from one handicap for WL and a completely different (higher) one for RTC. It's in this thread somewhere before... utterly unworkable as the suggestion may be. I quite agree with you about the plodding, but at our club (and most within 40 minutes of home) the only SH fleet racing is in Solos or Lasers... I picked the one that would at least attempt to carry me competitively! But this isn't news to the 100 fleet- they'd be one of the first to say where there has been genuine successful adoption it has been because of a decent enough local fleet - Hayling, Parkstone, Gurnard etc. Away from little lakes with easy going attitudes in similar-ish, suitable boats, handicap racing has always been a poor mans compromise- even more so with boats like the 100 which don't handicap easily. You may recall I actually changed clubs to get fleet racing (within an overall asymmetric fleet) when I got my boat we had 4 100s racing at one point, and several threatening to join. It seems that that club has now moved across to D-Ones.... I haven't enquired why, frankly I doubt either boat is suitable for small confined lakes racing PY.

I think the 100 hasn't lived up to the performance hype of the launch, clearly many have discovered that you need leverage for big sails and the 10.2 seems very unpopular such that the 8.4 brigade want to marginalise them to obscurity.
What about that little 7 meter sail, is that still around, also heard a 9m was under development, where do these fit in?

Well my experience is that at 92kg (ish) I found the 10.2 a handful and had to depower very early. I also found it a pig to gybe without the kite especially from reach to reach. Now I generally sail club courses which are either triangle sausage or trapezoids.
Why is it at our club we always have a long beat into the tide and a very short blast downwind with the kite? I find when doing triangles on the reaches the majority of the time I cannot fly the kite as I am generally overpowered. Then I get stuffed by Laser2s and RS500s who with their trap can carry their kite quite high. Maybe I should just pop the kite up and carry it for as long as I can but then I need to bear away to drop. In the meantime the Lasers are catching me up because they are not gaffing with a kite on the reaches and sail by the lee on the run. So I donot find the 8.4 a good handicap boat on our courses and am probably sailing closer to 1035. This year one of our good Laser sailors has bought an 8.4 and he is finding the same thing. Would I change class? No not at the moment because when I get the right course or just don't care then it is great fun. Will I do open meetings and the nationals? Probably not because there is not enough choice in the RS100 UK calendar. There are too many European events in the calendar and you get the feeling this is a manufacturers marketing ploy. One final point which rig is the one for the international class? I am surprised ISAF have let such a wooly description go with the 2 rigs allowed in the first place. I would have thought like the Laser each rig should be an international class in its own right. |

Err excuse me. This is absolute, 100% total b0ll0cks. I am beginning to despair with all this speculative, self-referring, auto-escalating tosh. It does not even qualify as hearsay. How does anyone here know what 100 sailors are thinking? Haroosh and I are the only 100 sailors here and we both keep saying pretty much the opposite. This is an RS100 Owners Thread so it's interesting that the nonsense comes from non-100 owners. Uh-oh... rushes to put on flame-proof suit |

you're certainly tenacious - I'll give you that James! But you been banging on about this now for ~3 years and you don't even sail a 100 anymore! The proposal is just that - subject to discussion and change - and anyway it ought to be up to the 100 sailors how they organise their own events and prizes. Not sure you've been very fair to Keith in these recent discussions - if anything it was that you backed one horse and didn't like it when it didn't win. 'Splits' 'donkeys' - not stirring? - come on!

If you don't want any public comment then take this to the rs100 owners private website ... It is you who is bringing this rule change here for public discussion. |
