Second that.

I used one for years - thought they were 'it' after moving as a teenager from my aft-sheeted Firefly to a 'proper' racer with centre-mainsheet.

Felt totally comfortable with centre jammers, clicking away like fury in gusty winds; I even installed one on my Laser 2 in the 90's.

Then I switched at our builder's request to an off-the-boom ratchet block ("I'll fit you a centre jammer if you don't get on with off-the-boom", he said) and suddenly realised that half my capsizes over the years were down to the wretched centre jammer.

Would never go back to a jammer voluntarily.

As a useful by-product, I trim a lot more nowadays on the beat!

bring him along to the FOM- he sounds like a legend!

Yes he is!

Can't disagree with that.  Also a legend in the apres sail!

Centre jammers - only as a spare hand. i.e when pulling the kite up. Mind you I recall from my distant Fireball days we used to cleat the main and play the kicker - is that still how it is done?

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else
