These thinly veiled claims that windsurfers are superior to dinghy sailors are very tiresome. Can we just all not agree that they are very different sports and require different skill sets and some individuals are better able to master one set of skills rather than another? and a few do very well with both ...

Actually no you can't, not on this thread, on this thread windsurfers rule and you lot are a sub species that can't even grasp basic physics, a sort of human only not fit for purpose..so you have to sit down a lot. ![]() |

That's better! Although it is tending towards simple contradiction.
Taking up your last point, if I can dignify it with that term, can we maybe put your dinghy performances down to an inability to sit down? Did you fall awkwardly astride a wishbone at some stage, perhaps?

The better joke would be the suggestion of the difficulty in distinguishing my standing and some normal person seated, as I said to someone else today small man syndrome is difficult to cure.
![]() As to sitting down, I do stand at every opportunity, usually in lighter weather, where I do get a better perspective and always seem to do better, won a few races stood up. I must say although it is my favorite of all the boats I've sailed to date, this EPS is by far the most difficult to actually win anything, even if you do win over the water, I think in all the time I've had it I've won one race overall and placed 2nd once down the lake and that was just plain good luck in that the Miracles all sailed into a bloody great hole leaving me free and clear in a bit of a breeze for almost an entire lap, (yet still one of them beat me on handicap). I never made any claim that windsurfers are superior, 'cause I don't believe that's true. Read my posts and you'll see that I have had many goes at Grf when he claims that boardsailers are better. I merely showed evidence to disprove MM's claim (probably tongue in cheek) that sailing a dinghy was much more technical than sailing a board. Personally, I have very little faith that anyone can claim that those from any particular type of sailing are better than those from other areas of the sport. |

absolutely... besides there's an entire racing windsurfing section of the highly active 'Boards Magazine' forum. It even has an active thread, of course it's about Nick Dempsey not Grumpf- you know, the other bloke in the UK who still races windsurf boards around dinghy courses.

My forefathers graduated from breaking rocks to stealing golden rocks that other people had broken, so we knew how to get by without working too hard. Getting shot by the District Commissioner like great-uncle Mickey did at Rockley was an occupational hazard, but every job has its downsides.

This thread is awesome. If it takes 20 pages of debate to try and disprove a simple mathematical argument it should be pretty obvious that the simple maths is probably right. :P
Here's a thought, rather than saying "it's wrong, because I've got this other model of how it works which is 20 pages of confusing prose", why not outline a mathematical proof of why doing basic vector maths to work out the effect of the tide on the wind and therefore speed in a given direction is wrong. Draw a picture, put vectors on it, show that it creates a false or inconsistent state. If you can't, the basic vector maths must be true. That's how science works. |
