Not quite sure how you'll make it to Kent, what with the laws of physics no long working. If the 3" greater freeboard Laser displaced less than the standard boat, I'm stockpiling food and on the lookout for a bunker. TEOTHAWKI.

No for the same reason that adding that extra couple of inches wouldn't work for say a Phantom, because a Phantom is what I would call a high volume boat at no time does the water exceed the fair waterline in a manner that reduces the boats performance. Half this lot on here are arguing without fully understanding all the complexities of forces that apply to racing craft, they assume that everything works the way it is supposed to because their daddy told them it does or they read some lame book. How you can argue a point when you don't actually know what it is you are arguing about since there is no data available because you're not given it. Thanks to Dan we now have the 'volume' or approximation of volume of a Laser at 1000ltrs which seems a tad on the high side to me but I'm happy to accept it. The Laser generally runs quite low in the water under race conditions, as it tacks very often water exceeds the deck line so to my mind it is a low volume craft, hence my suggestion of increasing it an inch or two maybe increase the volume by ten percent which would reduce the amount of water above the fair waterline in inefficient areas. We hear from our resident dinghy booksmith that this is totally rubbish. We have others trying to hint that I'm saying you can go on adding height and the boat will get faster, which is not what I'm saying at all. If you go back to what caused this, it was the discussion about volume, my interpretation of it and your collective descriptions such as displacement, buoyancy etc which sort of mean the same but don't because some boats have an enclosed shape like the Laser and others have an Open Hull. Open Hulls have high freeboard so have a relatively open ended approach, no maount of increased freeboard would make any difference. Boats like mine however and the Laser have relatively enclosed bits you sit on rather than in, so to my mind volume of them is an important consideration. My Boat could definitely do with an extra inch or two, in windy gusty conditions there's a regular water ingress, but then I sense the designer had more planing speed in his mind than roll tacking performance. It's very interesting trying to debate with closed minds though, I have enjoyed it, not much Wiki going on though. |

I'll be honest.... you've lost me on this one Grumph. Unless you fill the "enclosed volume" with helium?
I just can't get me head around how a section of (extra) hull that has no interaction with the water at all can have an effect on hull speed (other than adding weight). I do however, applaud your questioning of the accepted norm, be that design, technique and the business as a whole. This is the way of a true (potential) innovator. |

Tell me why would a 3" greater freeboard displace less than a standard boat and what gave you the first idea that's what I was suggesting? Aren't you supposed to be some sort of boat journo? So does that automatically give you fact distortion prerogative? |

There once was a naughty monkey at the zoo. He enjoyed teasing the visitors, sometimes he was able to grab a tie or even a womans skirt. They laughed it off. But then health and safety came along and the bars were replaced by glass. His fun was gone. He moped about his lonely pen looking for some distraction. What’s this black square thing. Ah yes I pulled that from a punter last year. Lets play with it, oh it opens up like a flower, ooh that’s a pretty picture of a boat. What are all these square things. I’ll hit them. Something weird appears before his eyes- Cease to persuade, my loving Proteus: He continued, soon a hundred lines were writ. Oh I’m getting board of this. What else does this thing do. Whats this- Favorites hmm Y&Y forum hmm YES I can tease again, I’m saved. STOP FEEDING THE MONKEY |

From experience it takes 17 children to sink an Oppie. That's roughly about 600 litres.

Peaky .. Far too imprecise for the wiki sail by GRF thread ..... Anyway it actually only takes one 420 at full chat with two kid to sink an oppie, so 17 kids is an unnecessary H&S risk .... Shame on you risking all those kids lives in order to provide iGRF with tech info ...
![]() Back to the purpose of this thread. .. Why does sawing the bow off a boat make it so competitive under PY .... Perhaps pond monkey has some tech info (in pink!) for GRF so we can get some further fact based words of wisdom from the Guru

Well Martin- a couple of minor observations; firstly I'd contest that it would be the Oppy sinking the 420. Those nice hard as nails chine corners into a 'soft as Philly' rounded 420; broadsided on a reach, both at full chat with twinky passing to windward, then 'bang!', hard luffed by the Optimist...
Well the little fella would have the last laugh. Either way the two teenage drama queens won't be worried about builders specs and volume when they've just been completely owned by a snotty 8 year old who didn't appreciate the proximity of their windward overtake. As for blunted bows, I hadn't realised the Solo was so blessed until I picked it up. It adds the character and we all know traditionalism deserves leniency when it comes to PY. There's no other reason for the Great Lakes anti-innovation stand point via their adjustments. (Oops, looks like I've opened Mike's favourite can of worm soup again...) |

Climbs out of reeds next to flat-calm lake somewhere in englandshire...
"yee gads, seems some of you dinghy chaps have moved on from cords and check shirts beneath red all-in-one spray suits and air-pocket life jackets, even saw two youngsters in an orange boat with a spinaker pole that had slipped down the mast, gone through the foredeck and was actually poking out the front, bit like a bowsprit on a proper Gents yacht the other day"... retreats back into reeds "oh well, must get back, one more coat of varnish to stick on the redoubtable steed before the weekends racing" ...I believe, in GRF/iGRF terms, this is pretty much a summary of dinghy sailing ala Britannia, we all need enlightenment from the "board sports" as they are all much funkier, popular and cooler than us fuddy-duddies with our beer towel bums, penchant for ale and babycham and liking for sailing craft you can sit in (or on) rather than stand on... |
