I know this subject has been explored before but the technology moves on so maybe this has value.
We have seen big events putting GPS devices on boats to provide live tracking on a screen on shore. Smart phones with GPS tracking and 3G are now commonly owned by sailors. Phones could be charged up, and put in sealed (black) bags onboard. Location data is recorded and either uploaded once on shore or "live" via 3G. We just need an app to log which phones to track and to combine the data onto google earth. This could be great for training and competitive events with minimal cost and intrusion. How close are we to making this a reality?

I think we are there now if we want it. But do we though? I can see the benefit from a training perspective, but honestly for 'live tracking' / event reporting- is any one that bothered? It seemed like a nice gimmick a couple of years back, but now it just seems like a bit of a nonsense.
A good write up, a bit of video, some nice photos and the results... What more do we want from events we're not actually on the water at? Edited by pondmonkey - 24 Mar 13 at 5:17pm |

I can't see that very many people will be interested.
Who is actually going to watch any of this stuff? It had a novelty value for a few events a few years ago, but the acid test is would you pay to watch it? Personally I'd place a lot more value on some narrative from the competitors and/or race team. Aside from the unreliability of 3g at venues, issues with people's phones not always being on or the fact that many of them have rubbish gps performance. |

Tracking has it's place for the big youth champs I would say where you have the parents/support teams on shore. I'm not sure there are many other events where you would have a large enough on shore audience to merit the effort and the big screen.

I liked the use Minorca sailing put it to, showing the racing after as a training aid, but even there very few people came to the de-brief, even though it was held in a bar.

It could be interesting to make some of the top sailors at an event carry them so us mortals can see what they have done differently, bust I suppose this is similar to its training use. I can't see it being used extensively though, too much cost and complication.

And too little real information. GPS is not that accurate. To make any sense of it you need wind data, boat heading and acceleration data. It works better on bigger boats where the GPS errors are smaller in relation to a boat length, and acceleration and pitching, rolling, turning are less. |

I've got a little device that is based on a 9 axis inertial measurement unit, which measures roll, pitch and heading every 1/100th of a second and uses a canny bit of maths to ensure it is accurate. It's about the size and weight of a small matchbox and stores the data on a SD card (and can also stream via Bluetooth to a coach boat). I think it could be very useful as a training aid to measure just how upright you are, what trim you have, how well you roll tack etc. Next task is to link it to a speed puck to be able to assess the effect on speed.
