Can anyone comment on whether a sail of that style will last as long?
My feeling is that the material must be under higher stress supporting that top batten, but I don't know what the real effect is. I have sailed an 800 a bit, I think the main is pretty old but still works fairly well. On that level, RS800's are cheap to buy and run, and an awful lot of fun. I guess there will be a good supply of used sails now, so a few club-level boats might get newer mains. I'm not sure it will help the UK circuit, as the difficulty is always getting club sailors to travel. But if RS really can sell a decent number of boats abroad, that has to be good, but I imagine the 49erFX will give them some serious competition? Cue re-opening the old debate about allowing the crew to pump the main up the beat.... |

It will probably last just as long, they've put an extra batten in so it might last even longer...

The extra batten at the top come at the expense of a full batten a third way down, which means there's quite an ugly crease in the luff of the new sail with no / very little wind in it vs the old one (check it out at the dinghy show this weekend). Whether this proves to be a speed difference remains to be seen, but will only be apparent in <6 knots anyway. As soon as any kicker or cunno comes on, it gets pulled out and the sail sets very nicely.
A full third batten was tested, apparently, but it changed the dynamic of the sail too much (EDIT - in breeze), making it much less manageable, therefore failing the 'should be as usable as the old one' test. Edited by hum3 - 28 Feb 13 at 6:21pm |

Looks like a step in the right direction and I can't see it causing any harm to the class. The 14's changed to square top mains a few years ago and they really do make the diffence in the light stuff and being slightly flatter go faster in the heavier winds.
One trick I don't know why they didn't go for is to make the batterns full length for the bottom 3? That is why it has a nasty crease in the middle of the sail.

If it had all full length battens it'd become nearly as much of a slut as a 14 Alex.
Soft battens mean that it's less on/off binary in tacks/gybes/manoeuvres at the expense of a little profile stability. Remember that the remit ( which it fulfills well) is to be accessible to average sailors, mixed crews etc. An early prototype was shelved because it capsized when left floating while the trolley was grabbed. 14s will capsize if you show it a sniff of heel, and in no wind at all if you don't hold them. |

This is Luke Alex's crew so I fully understand how much of a handful the 14 can be while trying to get on and off the beach. Was just wondering why they didn't go for it.
I am a fan of the 800 and enjoyed sailing it in Minorca with my brother who had never trapezed before or used a kite. It defiantly fills a very good space in the dinghy market for twin wire fun. Edited by carshalton fc - 28 Feb 13 at 7:16pm |

Pending a successful vote the sails should be available mid May. My wife's birthday is also mid May. Mmm, I wonder.
