Could you add in a 400 and 29er with the 1 & 2?
These are the classes sailed at our club the most on our W/L and would be intresting to see if it backs some of my thoughts.

Alex

On the 200 in particular, going downwind is very binary. You are either going as low as possible, or heated up and planing. In marginal planing conditions, those who are slow to respond to changes in wind strength are slow to get to the leeward mark...

Thanks Peaky.

Very true hum3, all winter it's either blowing a gale or drfting for us and in both cases the 2's have been going straight downwind! very annoying :-)

so one for the D-One boys... in the light n' sh*te, properly sub-planing FOM weather, would it pay to sail by the lee under unarig rather than put the kite up?  One of the clear advantages of a stayless mast  (on paper at least) is this very specific tactical option... has anyone found cause to try it yet?

I don't think I know of a boat where it doesn't pay to take the rag down when it gets really stupidly light, so that has to be the case. Exactly where the changeover point happens though is another matter.

Agreed

Another name for a kite that will not fill is "Air-brake"

is "drag curve" the descriptor for that moment post sailing in an xxxxxx event where you've had way too much 'refreshment' and you take the 'wrong turning' in a provincial town somewhere west-of-the-bristol-channel?

either that or it's got something to do with aerodynamics....
