Another thing, if the Weta is the same speed round a course as an RS400 then it is barely faster then the D-one!  We have a current PY of 953 (which i would think will end up around 960-965) We have some awesome racing with 400's, they are slightly faster than us upwind but we are faster downhill.  All in all it makes for some brilliant racing.  They are a great benchmark for us as there are usually 400's out to play with.

Ruscoe,
Like all things the Weta is a compromise. It could have a bigger sail and a retractable canting bowsprit with a full cut assymentric etc etc but its built for a broader appeal. It has sold well in the US and the French love them, but the UK is not so multihull friendly.

D-one has done well with a limited resource. I suspect it is a grower, but probably held back by being perceived as  expensive when directly compared to other singlehanders. Given its carbon construction and quality, its not, but many people wouldnt initially notice that.

A lot of the smaller lakes won't allow multihulls which probably doesn't help the weta, since that's where I would imagine a lot of its target market sails.  I've seen them out at Oxford and they look great.  A good boat for me when I'm older I think.

As for the D1, it's high on my shopping list but I suspect will be the last racing singlehander I will buy.  I'm not put off by the price tag partly because I'm inheriting the money and partly because I know it's a quality product and for me will be worth it.  Assuming I can sail it of course....
the same, but different...

I've thought this, something that is closer to being a light dinghy with a trapeze added than a singlehanded skiff. Something that you could depower and sail like a Solo if you need to short tack through the moorings to get ashore, or in survival mode.
There are of course good singlehanded cats if you want to look beyond monohulls.
I don't get the Vortex, it seems like a sand-bagged cat to me, but racing other Vortexes (vortices?) might be fun.
The real trouble tends to be the old problem that a boat which breaks the mould is not too easy to race on PY fairly.

Careful now, this seems to be erring towards dinghy development and you know this forum is only for pushy parents* , mud flingers and people who want to moan about 'cheating' at some winter handicap event or another.... Wink

On the subject of a longer 'Vortex 2' yup, it's a good idea to me as well, the only drawback I can see is the same one that has foiled my dreams of A-class ownership in the past, you're going to need a lot of room to get the best from such a beast.

*want to see really pushy parents? take a trip to your local sunday-league football, that in my opinion, is where you'll find the real hard cases, those who've got the whole thing waaaayyy out of perspective, far worse than anything I've ever experienced at an Oppy, Topper or squady-type sailing event

I think you should look at a Farr 3.7

I think the Farr 3.7 is a nice boat, but on the small side for myself and where I sail.
It's kind of academic, as I'm busy with 2 man boats right now.

I think speccy did quite well on the hadicap you have at the BM! took us a race to haul him in and overtake him! although we did have a few nightmares with frustrated merlins along the way (who are ridiculously fast upwind!)
