Now look, I only club race. I get my national sailing hit from another source. My friends locally would be happy for me to build a foiling Lightning as long as I continue to come in the bottom 5% of the fleet....which I will do.

A new boat would need a new boom from Claridge, but an old Giles boat is allowed any boom that fits the class dimensions.

if tick wants a round boom should he not be saving his pennies and buying a new boom and mast from john?

the lightning is a one design after all.

i can see why tick would want a round boom, i still have a dent in my head from the last time 333s boom hit me! Wink LOL

The budget option - at least at larger clubs - is when dinghy park clearance time comes around. Rotting heaps in the darkest corners of the dinghy park may yet deliver useful spar sections. The boom on my vintage Cherub is a nice round 3" section courtesy of a rotted Fireball, and a reasonable size mast section will always make a decent enough boom, even if you end up with a track you don't need. My vintage Moth has a boom that looks as if it could have been something like an Enterprise spar.
