Alleged to offer "no performance enhancement over current 800 mains, but more user friendly."
Punk PY has been same on sailjuice/great lakes for years now at 1015.
Suspect that'll remain despite Julian coming nigh on last this year, or Fred coming nearly last at glyn Charles a couple years back.
New sail is pretty much identical in outline to last one, so not really a performance change. More user friendly tho :-)..
Tiny bit less area down near the clew if anything. |
The 'should we make it go faster if we are going to change it?' question has been debated within the class, I believe the answer was 'yes' but development is ongoing. A current rig 800 was ahead of one of the new ones AFAIK.
I guess the Punk class rules are not easy to violate? But your PY reflects the fact that the organisers don't have a lot of data to go on.

Ha ha yes the "class rules" are not what you would call a mature document. Not exactly a lengthy tome right now. Still, the small but highly dedicated membership works around this to ensure that the spirit of gentlemanly sportsmanship is upheld at all times. So far all changes (necessary and in the interests of the class and its membership) to the class have been non performance enhancing, and rollout across the whole fleet has been almost instantaneous, ensuring that equality and consistency is upheld. Joking aside, you are correct, making PY on the basis of one sailor's results is personal handicapping - no other way right now tho. Scored some results a while back in the boat's ideal conditions that nearly caused upset, especially following the non-awarding of the BM to Graham Vials, so the PY means that as long as anyone competant turns up, an act of god wold be required to win even in the boat's ideal conditions.

When is anything a given?
The discussion at the agm last year was very positive about a change (although the change had to be a step forward for the class). Feedback on the development is also positive, we are happy with the sail used at the Bloody Mary and will be getting as many sailors to use it as possible in the coming weeks so that opinions can be gathered and any problems can be ironed out.
We are of course hopeful that it will be voted in by the class, we are confident it will as the process was started by the class.

Stevie,
To clarify - are you saying that there was an 800 sailing with a sail that doesn't currently measure as an 800 sail?

There were 2 800's sailing with the latest version of the prototype we are testing, so technically they would not be classed as currently legal

I trust the crews singed off retired then rather than claiming their finish positions in flagrant breach of the RRS.

As the testing is part of the class associations changes then I feel that the sails would classify as being class legal at that point.

Excuse me but its only an opinion, if I were racing against them and the class association had provided the sails to be trialled and with the current ethos of the new sails I would have no issues what so ever with them beating me. Dan

despite being in no way involved, if the class association had given a dispensation for the trial set, then essentially, aren't they are class legal..?
