You never know, they might have declared it at entry?
Were there not some out of class RS800's fairly well up the results?
Personally, I'm all in favour of people bringing experimental stuff to these events, it should just be a case of declaring it and another 'finger in the air' handicap consideration. If I put a trapeze on the 400, it would obviously warrant a significant PY change, but most of these mods are very marginal, maybe they should get a default 5 points or something?

Agreed - big fuss about nothing IMHO (unless they win of course ). Ask Daniel H what PY the Punk used with the newer sail... I think the OP was more curious about the appendages, rather than complaining about infringements...

All I wanted to know is what they would be used for....

800s with the new square top sails were up there in far less breeze than you'd normally expect 800s to be up there.
Alleged to offer "no performance enhancement over current 800 mains, but more user friendly."
Punk PY has been same on sailjuice/great lakes for years now at 1015.
Suspect that'll remain despite Julian coming nigh on last this year, or Fred coming nearly last at glyn Charles a couple years back.
New sail is pretty much identical in outline to last one, so not really a performance change. More user friendly tho :-)..
Tiny bit less area down near the clew if anything.

I may have my lines crossed, but I got the impression the RS800 has been to the cosmetics counter and come away with a new main?

The 'should we make it go faster if we are going to change it?' question has been debated within the class, I believe the answer was 'yes' but development is ongoing. A current rig 800 was ahead of one of the new ones AFAIK. I guess the Punk class rules are not easy to violate? But your PY reflects the fact that the organisers don't have a lot of data to go on.

The development 800 mainsail was used by 2 boats at the BM, one of which was beaten by a standard 800 mainsail in what was a very tight race between the three boats. Development is still ongoing on the new sail, a vote will follow on whether to introduce it or not.

I understood from an 800 owner that it was a given? Inc significant discounts for the new mains in the first year?! Prob chinese whispers..
