At the BM last weekend two 420s launched before us, each had a winged rudder that look like they had added fibreglass wings to the side, as they were different sizes and added after I take it this is a class mod but what advantage does this have? They were fit half way down, so not at the bottom like the moth.

Possibly reduced cavitation by stopping air travelling down the blade?
Best wishes from deep in the woods

I can't beleive a 420 would be fast enough to need them.

N12 is fast enough to benefit. 420 is similar speed. Well, twice as quick in breeze.
Closer to the surface means more squashing of the stern wave.

How big were these things? A "fence" on the rudder blade a little below the waterline to stop ventilation (NOT cavitation, that's an entirely separate phenomenum) is not a new idea: people have used them on and off since at least the 1960s. But that wouldn't need to be more than two or three inches wide at the most.

A fence would also normally go right round the leading edge, rather than be separate each side.

Out of class I would expect.

According to the class rules I had a quick look at they don't even allow 'shaped foils', they have to be flat except for bevelling 105mm from the edges.

I can't see them going from flat foils to allowing wings...

Yes they were small but of the two boats that launched before me, they were not of equal size or position.

Here's hoping that it is the worst indiscretion this winter season event, and that it doesn't have any effect on any overall results. After the last two years, the SJ can hardly be hoping for any more controversy.
Any comment from the 420 class association on the matter?

Did anyone protest them? Did they retire admitting they were out of class?? With facts being known afterwards, could a protest be opened now? Possibly.. So protest them, or even QMSC could protest for entering an out of class boat...

Would it achieve much? Possibly not, but you could say it is a matter of principle...
