It just annoys me that laser would not make the boat more user friendly. When John Claridge took over Lightning he made various modifications that made sailing the boat a better experience, removing the thwart and changing the deck molding. He also cured it from leaking round the centre board case. It has been proved that these new boats are no faster than the old......well, except that a new boat will be faster anyway. So why not Laser?

The point of the laser is that its accessible to all at club level. Yes you may be the wrong weight - get a radial rig !!! or a 4.7 ? Half the people on this forum dont even sail laser. Tick - We dont want to change are lasers without going through the proper chanels Ukla/ ILCA - ISAF. One because we dont want to make 200000 boats obselete or give someone the edge in club racing and by only make small changes it will eventually filter down to all boats. |

The point I was making kingdacks is that Laser could be made less annoying, not faster, just less annoying.

and that gives us no voice? FWIW most have sailed them, in fact I've owned four, i don't think that's unusual. The point Tick's making is very valid, they still carry the same easily resolved issues without necessarily increasing the speed or completely obliterating the one designs ethos. +1, as a past owner of three Lasers I whole heartedly agree with this point and as I said earlier in the thread, it doesn't have to be costly and revolutionary change, just stuff like the XD controls, small mods to make the rudder assembly better.....

Perhaps some of us would sail Lasers if a few changes were made? I don't think these things are the issue in my case, I'm sometimes tempted to get an old laser for the days when Mrs Co-owner doesn't want to sail because it's too windy, but that's about it. There is a fine line between listening to people who are put off a class by certain things, and listening to people who have no interest but think all classes should follow their way of thinking. There are two dozen classes for people who want a slight improvement on the Laser. |

That's very good point- although there's also a third group, who certainly wouldn't want to own another one, but do believe some minor alterations would improve the boat without dramatically affecting the performance or one design ethos... In turn this would lead to more folks sailing them at our clubs, thus providing a greater pool of potential upgraders for our chosen classes or even crews for windy days. |

Quite possibly, but surely the point is that lots more people already sail them than just about any other class - so why is so much time spent by people who don't sail them arguing about how to "improve" them?

Less annoying = easier to sail = faster. The XD controls are a case in point. Easier to get better control of sail shape - therefore faster. |

But not actual enough extra speed to make the boats feel much different, just enough extra speed to mean you have to spend the money. And a thorough pain in the neck to rig (although admittedly not as bad as the ridiculous "what were they thinking not to ban them) arrengements of loops and knots and eyes that preceded them). And destroy sails and topmasts. |
