I recall that this weight issue became hot news when Laser revised the stated weight of the 2k from 100kg to 140. I was never sure whether that was just Laser correcting a clerical error or acknowledging that the weight of more recent boats had indeed gone up.
There is no question, however, that first-generation boats do appear disproportionately often at the top of the rankings compared to other classes where newer is generally the rule.

I'm entirely confident that you would neither find a L2K hull even close to 100kg - it was a "clerical" error.
And I would say the proportion of older boats at the front end is testament to the longevity of the boats...interesting question as to how far that is down to the build weight also being relatively high. I notice no performance difference between my current year 2 boat and the one I used to borrow.

Extracts, just for RockHopper who should really be a Class Association member, of the email last week that went out to all Association Members...
" pleased to announce that LDC Sailing has agreed with the boat's designer Phil Morrison to take over manufacture and marketing of the 2000. This is exciting news for the class, and confirms what we already know - that the 2000 is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding 2 person dinghies to sail. Our active Class Association has been a key factor in LDC Sailing deciding that they wish to build the 2000, and we will be working closely with them and with Phil Morrison over the coming months as they make new moulds and finalise the specification for the boat. But one thing is certain - the 2000 will remain a strict one design, and new boats will be built to the same dimensions and with the same rig and sail plan as the existing fleet. 2013 promises to be an exciting new year for the 2000 fleet as we join the LDC Sailing / RS Sailing family. We start the year with a bright future, but with the same independent and strong class association, and with the same friendly people. " (Broadstairs Open Meeting in May!) We've got a bit of an odd mix as far as double handers go at Burton. It is predominantly Flying Fifteens and I don't want one of them. We've got two 400s and they definately don't look like beginners' boats to me. They're both sailed by experienced sailors and still they end up in the water. There are a couple of 420s sailed by adults and a couple of Fireballs, it's all PY RTC racing. Something with a symmetrical kite would probably be more suitable for the club, assymetrics just seem more appealing to me for some reason. I wouldn't even know where to start with looking for symmetric boats that would suit our weight, but that's another thread. |

Successfully confusing ambition with ability since 1980.

well according the press release new tooling will be produced, however there is deep sympathetic prose towards the one design ethos, referencing only seeking consent for minor amendments to some of the fitout options.
Personally I think it's a win for all those involved. I'd certainly consider one in the future (I already was tbh, but would have never bought a new, or even vaguely new one... now with a proper after-sales package in place from a reputable company, I'd certainly consider it in a few years.)

Fascinating development and good luck to RS - I'm sure they will do very well with it.
The last time I sailed one was across the Channel from St Margarets Bay to Calais - and it was ideal for the trip. |

I would reccomend one for you and family Jimbo, when the time is right. They are good to sai, have a friendly class with a good number of yonger people and can handle a good blow. Obviously they are not as light as the skiff type boats that some on here favour, but so what

I favour skiff boats myself- but I heartily recommend the 2000 to those it is designed for. The inversion thing is a bit of an issue, but not that big a one really as it is quite a stable boat and not exactly over powered.
And, as others attest, when it's too windy to be safely sailing in an overpowered skiff, they're awesome fun for those that know what they're doing.
