Are they different boats? Same shape, same sail area as far as I know, it's just the construction that is different. According to RS spec sheets the 300 is lighter than a Phantom (58kg vs 61kg), has more sail area on the B rig (10m2 vs 9.75m2) and has more RM (2m beam vs 1.65m), so you might expect a bigger difference between a 300 and a modern Phantom than between a modern Phantom and an old one.

Bit of history as someone who has owned a 300 since the first Champs. Started at 1009 and dropped gradually to 1000. About right....but in the same time I reckon my personal crew skill factor drop is about 40-50 points across all classes - much of that due to what I learnt in the 300. And I expect teh same is true for many - and which validates the point about using it as a bench mark.
I'd don't agree with all that is said here. You can point with phantoms, and the top end speed is good. I'm lucky on the sea where I sail that we ge some tight fetches/ one tack beats on which footing is fast - I can overtake the 400s in a F3/4 - which is pretty amazing. That said I generally can't read the numbers on the 100s when we get to the upwind side of the harbour...but I know they'll be brathing down my neck as we come downwind. For what it's worth I don't see the 300 as a bandit - it just has very few weaknesses in terms of point of sail. The phantom is less consistent (suffers on the run due to shrouds) and that perhaps helps hold its PY high. And the adjustability of the rig allows it to optimise massively in the right conditions.

Rs 300 is narrower on waterline too. Much less was at a guess.
Doesn't mean it's a perfect shape. Also the hull will pick up a lot of windage, The rig is pretty nasty too, whereas the phant nowadays has a very refined and high tech tech rig which is a fair bit closer to the deck. |

No they shouldn't. If you buy an older, cheaper boat in a competitive class you shouldn't expect to have an equalised chance of winning. The handicap should be based on the latest incarnation, using independent expert judgement to supplement the stats, if necessary. |

I hope I didn't give that impression, the reason I chose the 300 as a suitable bench mark was precisely because by now the folk who use them would be practised at it, they use it to a standard, it's not a boat clouded with lipstick glory hunters and it's been constant since I've been around. In my time the Phantom grew because of it's handicap as has the Streaker and probably the Solo, has it always been like this? Dinghiests clamouring for handicap bandits or is it a relatively new phenomenon? Anyway that's not the point for discussion, the point I'm trying to make is that there needs to be a given null point or the whole scale will expand up and down with no basis in an absolute performance unit by which to judge a boat in real terms. How can the speed of a Laser that has been basically the same thing vary from 1078 to what is it now 1110 the sail juice lot are running it at? |

One simple solution 'if' PY is so bad.... Don't do it anymore. It's very refreshing to not give a flying fig what your PY is anymore... hand on heart I would need to look it up to tell you what the Solo is.

My experience with a 300 is that it's extremely course sensitive, much more so than many singlehanders. If you've got even just one close reach anything with a spinnaker stands little chance. If you haven't it's about 5 points faster than a Merlin.

=1 James. I enjoy the 3. That's why I sail it.
Dan - intrigued by your rig comments....many have admired the 300, especially the way the mast and sailwork together. Why nasty? Windage = freeboard = allow windward heel = fast = make windage work for you.

I'm with you on the nasty rig. I only sailed the 300 once and the rig just felt lifeless.
