So I'd quite like to design my own boat and race it and possibly get it a handicap (takes a lot of effort and racing).

What I propose is a Skiff design (mini 49er) for singlehanders but mainly carbon.
-Assymetric Kite
- Foiling (not sure whether to include this)
- Jib as well
- Fat head main (square top)

What do we think, and how would I go about this design/build?

Maybe look at similar designs like the Musto Skiff.
Read Higher Performance Sailing by Frank Bethwaite.
Draw yourself some quick sketches and then make some line drawings.
Outline features which are key to your original idea.

Potentially do you think it could work?

I'm no naval architect but sure, why not? As long as you understand that it would be a BIG project and take a lot of time and money especially if you are working in carbon. Foiling on your own with an asymmetric would take a great deal of skill. I wouldn't foil that sort of thing.

hmm perhaps just a trapeze then without foilers.. i'll have to see...
What's the main design reason as to why assymetric foilers don't work?

Mainly crew ability. As I said, I don't know a great deal about sailing dynamics but I should imagine that it is quite difficult to keep the boat balanced with a kite up whilst being 4ft above the water. R-Class skiffs do it in NZ but they have 2 people to do the work. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5cBTP7vI10

hmm.... I'm going to throw foiling out the window :) hehe!
I think a trapeze, main, self tacking jib and assymetric is going to be the way I go... now for some designing.

Wow! it seems easy! I'll knock one out over Christmas.

Sorry....cynical old b**tard. I'll tell you what. Buy my old Byte hull, make foils, fit Tasar  rig (available by separate negotiation) make some racks out of old glass windsurfer masts (also available) and Bobs your buttock!!!

Or not bother with the asymmetric and just foil. It's faster like that...
