Or make the changes and give these guys the option! They don't have to adopt changes they can leave their boat be! Why go to the expense of developing a new boat when the 600 can be bought cheaply both new and used and is regarded as a pretty good boat.

A simple sail redesign or basic change of cloth will add value both to the class and the existing fleet thanks to renewed interest. I am not sure many 600 sailors would be against the fleet getting a new lease of life, with the offer of more people to race against the only sacrifice will be the cost of updating your sail!!! But then again if it was just a cloth change you don't even need to do that!!!

Obviously you could keep arguing for the sake if it! But I think your point is a fairly week one!

This debate has been going for some time within the RS600 class. The thing is, the class is only struggling if you use the measure of boats at nationals and opens, although I realise that is a fairly reasonable measure of how a class is doing.
There's plenty of boats sailing at club level, but for some reason there's only a small number that wish to travel, and very often when an event comes round not all of those people are able to go, whether that's for financial reasons, other commitments or another reason, hence the low turnouts. But if the class has found it's niche as a cheap, tough, round the cans club racing boat, what's wrong with that?

One thing that has really caused a problem in my opinion, is the forum. Very often someone will start a thread asking who is going to a certain event, someone will reply saying they can't, then someone else will say the same, and before you know it the rot has set in and no-one goes.
We had the same problem at the Nationals, with the entry list, such as it was, visible online. A vicious circle began of people not wanting to enter due to the low number of entries.

I remember seeing jamie's rant in the 600 forum - he makes a valid point about that. Also with the travel. I sail mine at BBSC, and only one of the three there that regularly sail (like really regularly, most weekends at least) can actually travel. With myself being at school, and the other at uni, it makes it pretty difficult to find the time for the events, as they're generally a fair trek up to somehwere like grafham. Once I've been driving for a while then it might happen, but until then, its simply the fact that they are just that little bit too far to mkae it.

But in terms of club racing, we have a really decent turnout, and for that purpose it really is a blast. Sailed a 29er previously before moving into this, and so glad I got a 6 instead of a Radial or equivalent.
There's still at least 6 600's kicking about in our boat park, and not many of them seem to get used bar the aforementioned 3.

Out of interest had a look at the number of returns given to the RYA for the PY and seems Jamie’s club theory is more valid. It’s up there with some more not so dead classes but granted some of the do have bigger open scenes, which wouldn’t be included in this.
It’ll be interesting to see how the number of “Races” change for the next set of PY’s

LASER PICO RACE     1535

I say yes - gives the boat that little desirable edge. Imagaine an RS900-grey 600 hull...it would look pretty nice

My mate had one (a 600) in that colour, it was an 800ish number, looked really good!
