I'm not biased, and I'd agree with the above post - the 600 just looks simple and fast. Many a time one has simply sailed off into the distace from me in a race, no fuss, no spray, just bloody quick.

Of couse, at other times I've seen them going backwards out of tacks, standing on their transoms and falling over. Such is the price of having all that fun...

I did a lot of the second part in brief time I had mine.
I think the way the 600 looks is a classic, iconic design of its time.
I don't think mucking around with the sail shape will improve it.

Regarding colours, wasn't there an all-yellow one on eBay a while back?
Epoxy compatible polyester gelcoat can be supplied in a vast range of colours, according to this data, complete with picture of RS800...

Going to have to disagree on that one (although maybe a little biased...) i think the 600 is a far nicer looking boat than say the 700 and the musto, alot more agressive looking with the long curved foredeck, raked back mast and chineless design.
And then consider also its nearest equivalent in the old / heavy stakes is the contender......

Would be ace to great more in the class, and the ability to buy a reasonably priced new one can only be a very good thing, hopefully breathing a bit of a new lease of life in. I do feel however that more needs to be made of the boats plus points, from my limited time in the class it does seem to be that alot of people see them as just a cheap stepping stone to a 700 or mps, when they can be so much more than that.

Mate please don't quote part of a post and take it out of context  I think the boat looks fine I was talking about the sail, which looks so last century now.  This can be changed by a simple change in cloth type.  At the end of the day i couldn't careless.  I don't own a 600 and have no plans in the immediate future of buying one.  But i think my point is valid about changing the sail cloth.  It would bring its looks bang up to date.

But the 600 rig is a horrid compromise for the 'reefing' option.
Very much a big 70's moth rig, with no lowers, lots of bend low down, not enough upper bend, 2 types of mast of variable bend, but a very full sail so you won't notice Wink.  Full sail + fully battened makes it tricky.

I agree Andy, my choice would be a dramatic restyle.  but as others have said!  you dont want to upset the boys that have spent £1500 on a boat for the long term sake of the class!!  Mental.

I'd not realized you were simply talking about the sail only earlier, either. By the sounds of it, it needs a re-think, but maybe not to what is simply the current fashion, but to what would work best for the boat.

It's really no surprise that a rig designed by Roger Angell, on a Clive Everest hull from 1993 is now a little out of date.  Personally I'd grandfather the existing boats and give the rig a whole re-think and market to the inland, rtc sailor who doesn't want to arse around with a kite and capsizing on every gybe.

I'm not sure if Daryl's following this thread, but it would be interesting to get his 'vibe' on the kites on the impending Farr 3.7 builds, I'd wager most won't bother.

At £1000 for a cheapo that's still good 'entry grade', so don't worry about the 'customers' who are clearly so 'after-market' that these boats barely can be found with a decent condition sail on them second hand.

Harsh... sure.  Commercial... hopefully.

The all yellow Rs600 was probably mine,  we only made a couple yellow Rs600's. In those days we had to use a standard polyester gelcoat with a tie layer for it to adhere to the epoxy, it was relatively time consuming. Since then the epoxy compatible gelcoat have significantly improved.
As you  point out we do use the Crystic system, you can get it any colour but if you stray away from their stock colours you have to purchase a vast amount, its just not economically viable.

Those people are the class, mostly, although there must be a few pretty recent boats who have paid more.
Perhaps it would be better to start from scratch, as there is not much capital in the class, leave them to it, take all the lessons learned and build a brand new boat.
Or just offer the 700 without a kite I suppose?

Out of interest how many yellow ones have been made? I'm currently on my second yellow one...
