i would love the to see some one buy a new 600 and if the numbers did pick up i think i would go back

Well even with the current sail refashioned in a different cloth would be a step in the right direction, the development in both the 4 & 3 saw the price of the sails reduce.  It seems such a shame that the 3 & 6 are not selling new boats (albeit the 300 has had the odd batch built) they are froma time when RS really produced Racing Sailboats.  The boats are as good now as they always were so with a bit of a spruce up and bit of a push i dont see why they wouldnt sell again!!

If the class is keen, I would be happy to look into moving it forward.

FTFY- Worth the punt in my opinion

um what a good idea !only problem is could be expensive in the end 200 for loan of a boat over the weekend entry fee driving to the venue

but i see where you are coming from

Alex,
You should put it to the class mate, i think it has legs.  But thats only my opinion.  I am not an owner of a 600.  But its a shame to see them get overtaken and fade away into nothingness.  When IMO a freshen up would make it a viable choice for others!  What else fills that gap other than the contender?  Further more if the clew was raised slightly so the boom was more Mustoesq and gave the helm more room to tack i think ou could be on to a winner.  As for the 700, not sure who the hell would buy a new one when the Musto seems such a more popular alternative now.

the 600 design imho is spot on i just think it needs a push and again as a ex class rep i think something needs to happen soon to market the boat again as ruscoe says what else fills the gap other then a contender

I suspect any performance-changing upgrade to the 600 would kill the class.
Unless things have changed since I had one, the bulk of the keen people in the class are not awash with cash, its niche is as a fairly cheap, exciting boat.
People with more cash are being pulled into the MPS.
TBH, I think the things that have evolved most since the RS600 was launch would be hull shapes, I don't think you would make it without a trace of chines today?

There would be nothing to stop RS making the existing sail in the ODL-6 black/grey fabric that most Merlin mains seem to use, that would look pretty good.

If I found myself crewless, it would not be the look of the mainsail that stopped me going back to the 600. It would be the fact that the MPS is said to be not much harder to get around the course, and even if I only got the kite up once a weekend, that would be better than dead running a 600 in F2.

It's very easy on here for people to talk up changes they have no intention of buying into.
In my view, what is needed is to get more of the 400 or so existing 600's actively sailing.
Or maybe the world has moved on and it's time for a clean sheet of paper? Looking at the RS100 sales figures does suggest that it is possible to succeed with a new class.

yes but for the last 4 years people have tried to pull these very elusive 400 people back sailing but it does not work i spent 2 days emailing 400 people and i had a hand full of replies it needs a rethink and maybe a new way to market to someone in the market of buying a new boat

you are right people who are in the market to a single handed skiff will buy a musto i guess i did but it was not because i was bored of sailing down wind in a force 2 dead running it was because the numbers where not there anymore and many of my friends also went and got a skiff

I doubt a modest sail cloth change e.g. the ODL6 you mention, wouldn't kill the class, especially if the performance difference was negligible and there was some degree of a price reduction to the consumer as a result.

As it happens there's no way I'd want another trap singlehander sailing where I do, but I could see at open water venues with RTC courses, the 600 would be a very nice setup to race.  If you're stuck doing boring handicap races, at least the 600 would add some challenge and grin factor.
