Having read this thread there does seem to be an assumption that all sailors have been to Uni and that is the source of sailors for the future, I hasten to add that I wish my son to attend University for the same reasons any parent would and he will not walk away with a debt if I can avoid it.
We sail a variety of boats both together and singly and to be honest the RYA programmes and  squad system is not appealing just for the very reason it seems to be set for the people to earn out of it!
I did a strange thing at 18 and went to work.  It paid for my sailing until family commitments quite rightly overode the sailing.
I think there is a stigma still associated with the sport as it being elitist and for the privelidged which is extremely difficult to change and the RYA are doing very little to change that. I accept that on board is running and introducing youngsters but the eople running it are paid employees?
You may have guessed I am a cynic and dont support the RYA and their attitude at all.

I used to agree with you for all the anti-elitist reasons you cite, but my attitude towards the RYA has softened somewhat now I'm more aware of their wider contribution to sailing outside of the performance filtering, which actually doesn't make up the majority of their output as we may think.

Having spent former time with faceless Whitehall bureaucrats, I can assure you wouldn't want them 'running sailing' as would be necessary in our litigious culture/society if it weren't for the RYA acting custodian

Yes fair enough I agree with the wider topic.  It just seems they are stifling the fantastic fun that you elude to as a youth and I enjoyed before that.
Frustrating!!!! It also seems to stem from the fact that I remember all the input we had as youths as free and goodwill form the older generation.  It now seems to be a revenue stream for those employees and 'professionals'.
Am very sorry did not intend to drag this off topic.
The same as yourself I have had to suffer the bureaucrats from the top down.  The second point i agree on.

Well, it needn't cost ten grand from any one person in particular.

Let's just say a series got underwritten, then the decision had to be taken as to which craft were selected as 'suitable' the manufacturers of said class could be tapped up for entry, then a manufacturers prize be awarded on the basis of the one with the most of the said craft in the top ten, kind of formula 1 style.

Year one would have to be on existing stuff, but year two could be boats developed specifically for the task, that way we get a hot bed of development with new stuff coming out for the future. The kids get an alternate to RYAdom.

Not sure what problem you are trying to fix, the event had an entry of 167 boats the majority of which were youths ...

we don't need yet another class, there are too many classes already.  what's needed is for more young people to join up to some of the classes we already have.  This might mean some of the lesser classes fall by the wayside, but that's the way of the world.

This thread seems to assume that the kids don't have a mind of their own; they do, and they are already sailing in the classes they choose because they like them, not because the RYA says they must.  They certainly don't need another manufacturer to creat something flashy and 'cool' that they just won't be able to afford.
the same, but different...

But back in the 1950's, people were saying that there were too many classes, too. If designers had stopped designing then, where would we be?

Actually, I guess at many clubs, exactly where we are now, minus Lasers...

Actually there were 76 29ers and the kids were having a good time. The 29er was provided for them and they love them.....much nicer than 420 or Hobie things. Offer them a cool single handed boat when they tire of splashing along in a Topper and they would go for it. Sailors do vote with their feet but you can only vote for a party that exists.
