I was out in my Musto, was great to be out in a 40 boat fleet. Visibility doesn't seem a big problem downwind, there are some blind spots butseems ok. Not many were capsizing at the gybe marks....there was some carnage with the 49er fleet descending on the leeward mark at the same time though and some capsizing there as people crash gybe while trying to get the kite down. The 49er really does leave a lot of turbulence when they go past though.

the thing is, the kids LIKE their toppers, and why wouldn't they? Amazing race turn outs, good club racing at almost every club, plenty of training, good venues for championships, great chances to socialise. They like the topper scene and they think it's cool. And for them it is, why change?

Tick you're assuming that kids are more image conscious now than they were 20 years ago. I remember people telling my parents that when I was 15, when in truth they were teenagers in the 60's when youth image consciousness was regarded as at an all time high, and arguably the only time in global fashion history when London and the UK were universally accepted as the ubiquitous capitals of cool. So no, I don't think kids are more image conscious and if anything they are prone to less peer pressure in a post-modern liberal world that sees race, gender and sexual equality verging towards utopian ideals (compared to where they were in the 70s anyway)

The more i think about it, the more i come to realise that there is little the sailing world can do to keep post Uni folk in sailing. Certainly when i was 17- 25 there were millions of things i would rather be doing then sailing a dinghy of ANY sorts. I had to much going on in my life like going out, girls, cars, going out, girls, going out oh and did i mention Girls... The last thing i wanted to do was get up at 9 on a Sunday and drag my arse to a sailing club! So for me it wasnt the boats, the Byte looks like a lovely little boat. But its no more cooler than a Laser.
I only revisted sailing once i had met my now wife and had settled down a bit. This coincided with me having more disposable income. So i think the way to promote sailing is trying to recapture the 22-28 year olds. So lets look at the craft which would suit this age set, if this were me 10 years ago :
*Byte - Always thought of it as a kids boat (I had one at 12)
*Laser - Yeah it gives fleet racing, is cheap, i dont have to maintain it
*300 - Looks cool, but no real fleet
*Solo - Why are the fleet all so old
*29er - why are all the fleet kidsin skinny jeans
*Musto - Maybe in the future
*100 - Yeah maybe, ticks all the boxes
etc. etc.
Trouble is these folk buy a 100, 300 etc. and realise that the 5 year break they had they were not as good as they thought they were, the boats keep capsizing and with no fleet i am not learning as i did when i was sailing toppers/Lasers as a kid. Ahh bollox to it, i will buy a mountain bike.
So i guess this is where we need to look for the furture (IMHO) a boat which fits for mid 20 sailor with a modest free income, which is attainable, offers a fleet mentality and requires no maintaince. Do you know what i think i have just described the Laser.....

The same conclusion I came to Russ... especially once you take circuit sailing out of the equation as it's now far more experience in petrol and refreshments than it was 10 years ago, even if you're prepared to kip in a car.

Perhaps what is needed is a fundamental change to the way sail racing is run, rather than ever faster (and more expensive) boats. A sort of Soft Play equivalent for those in early adulthood - pay & play, no ownership, no ties, no membership, no duties, no large capital outlay,just mucking around with 3 or 4 mates a dozen times a year when the forecast looks good.

agreed- sounds an awfully lot like kitesurfing and windsurfing though ![]() The one thing I've actually thought looks really good is the Devoti/Suntouched approach to chartering for the big events in the D1. In every other class there's this sense there are 'ringers', with the D1 you just get paying guests, some of whom may go on to buy a boat, which I guess is testament in itself. It's certainly a boat that wouldn't suit my local racing, but given the option, I'd be willing to pay to do the odd regatta in one at some point in the future. Maybe chartering is the way forward?

that's exactly why we bought the vagos - race when you want to, hire the boat for a nominal fee, one duty in a year, plus three of the same boats all for hire - and another five in the club already. It has to be the way to go. |

To break the "but there's big fleet of them, even if they are a bit naff/slightly rubbish"issue with Lasers and Toppers, you'd have to design the replacement, get tens of thousands of them built, then, overnight, nick all the existing class, crush/shred those and leave a shiny new boat in its place. Job done, everyone's happy (except for the massive landfill bill and the second hand market)
