I think the comparison with Hydroptere is more apt. That can do over 50 knots in a whole host of different conditions, which is why I think it is a much more special craft.

Anyway not trying to being argumentative, just trying to say why I wouldn't be as ecstatic if Sailrocket beat the record.

Personally I'll be over the moon if Paul and the Sailrocket team go over 60 knots and get the record - he's one of the nicest guys in the sport, he was always looking to help out if anyone needed repairs done down in Weymouth when he had Sailrocket 1 down there in around 2003. He's sailed a huge number of different boats and is truly dedicated to the sport.

Saying that 60 knots isn't much quicker than what other boats are achieving is nonsense. Yes, some extreme machines can peak at 40 knots and the boards are going over 50 but there are some serious technological and physical problems associated with going any faster - cavitation being the obvious one.

One amazing piece of thought on Sailrocket is the angle the main hull travels at - the front is around 20 degress upwind of the stern so that the aerodynamic drag is less - instead of pointing in the direction of travel it points at the apparent wind. That's good thinking in my book.

In the meantime, go go go Paul!

Crossbow only sailed on one tack - sails then dropped and towed back up the course IIRC, much like SailRocket.  The last 2 non-board record holders prior to Hydroptere, Yellow Pages Endeavour and Macquarie Innovations, were significantly more extreme and difficult to handle (certainly much harder to sail fast) than SailRocket.

The boards set their records in purpose-dug narrow trenches - at least the 'boat type' contenders don't need the course to be built/dug for them (though I'm sure there's more speed to be had if they did so).

As other people have pointed out, this is about the outright record - i.e. just about the only rule is that you're wind-powered (min. water depth also applies).  If you start putting in rules and restrictions then it's no longer the outright record, it's the record within a set of arbitrary rules.

The kites have the advantage of being able to use a slingshot effect, whether/how much they gain by it I don't know.

Sailrocket has just posted a 59 knot average. Would love to know what the peaks were on that! Well done to Paul and the gang.

All credit to Sailrocket, they really have made a big jump in speed.

I suspect it will put the record out of reach for many other craft for quite some time.

(still have same feelings as before, but as I explained it is just a personal view on how much this type of craft can benefit other water users. I just don't see any trickle down effect)
