I had some work done by the chap who was making the foils. They are a very whizzy shape!

Every other record holder from Hydroptere to Windsurfers to Kitesurfers have far more in common with typical craft that people use and can buy. They all can be used in conditions that are less than perfect ie. open ocean. The recent windsurfer 50knot record to fall was even done on a production windsurfer.
Sailrocket has just simply applied drag, RM and power theory into a craft that is useless on anything other than a speed course. It is just trying far to hard and therefore slightly unsporting in my book.

Apply this to cars, you're not going to take ThrustSSC to Tesco are you? It's designed for one job, and it does that job very well.

Needs to sail more...

But the point is that it is barely going faster than relatively normal kit driven by very skilled sailors.

I would feel differently if the technology made a dramatic difference ala ThrustSSC, but to only just do it isn't very inspiring to me.

barely faster than normal kit? Have you been close to 60 knots in your solo recently?

I meant most stuff that has been a record holder eg. windsurfers, kitesurfers, Crossbow, Hydroptere. They all look like recognisable craft that we use day to day. The windsurfers are even doing it on production equipment. This means any learnings from the record holders can filter down, which benefits all. Can't see much filtering down from Sailrocket.

Anyway a point of view.

I'm looking forward to taking my canted-solid-wing with flying pod out for a brisk yacht around in 2020, I'll be sure to wave nicely at the harbour master as I go by at 50knts +.... dodging the swinging moorings, fishermen and bemused g&t sippers on their birmingham navy specials, it should be a right grin.  I wonder if they'll have to revisit the idea that sailing boats are exempt from the harbour speed limit?

It's got an interior. Of sorts. And can go equally on both tacks. And a main that can be reefed.

The outright record contender kite boards and sailboards are pretty far out from "standard" kit (there is a record for "production" kit too).

Even I could sail the record breaking kite kit and windsurfing kit. It really isn't that different.

Having said that you could almost kite with anything that has a flat surface - I remember Wipika did a board that was literally just a plank of wood. No fins or anything.

Crossbow II did 36 knots in 1980 - the last pre-windsurfer record, with just a handful of non board craft in there since. If Vestas Sail Rocket can reach a sustained 60 knots for the record, that will be a pretty huge improvement % wise over 30 odd years.

To compare, the land speed record has gone from 634mph in 1983 to 760mph now, and hasn't been broken since 1997. A comparable change will be if Bloodhound SSC can break the 1000mph, and they seem to be having similar technical difficulties.

Yes, boards can be used by "normal" board sailors (but maybe a little slower than the record?) but they appear to be reaching the top end they can go? Sail Rocket is attempting to go well beyond that, or at least lay the foundations for it.
