No engineer would use nylon in that way for all the above reasons ...
When he says bulkhead do we assume sleeve? When he says inertia do you think he means point loading? The whole episode sounds a right dogs breakfast. Edited by 2547 - 08 Nov 12 at 10:12pm |

At time of writing...most popular other topics are fast pins, best photo of the year, front and rear drysuit, and slolo fleet still growing. Strikes me that people are thrashing around for something to pitch at. At the end of the day, the 400 is still a highly regarded boat (I'll have one one-day), the old boats still seem to be really competitive (look at the winner of the inlands), probably more people sail/race RS boats than any other adult class (Lasers??!) and thats voting with feet. TBH, a lot of the comment here may not be coming from people with any interest in the class...time to start a more interesting thread perhaps...?

The pole is going to be sorted, let's trust Alex on that. Everything else is pretty much ok. If you don't want a trapeze, you want decent racing and a bit of boatspeed, your choices are: RS400 B14 Merlin I think the 400 is the most affordable of those, the facelift has not changed that. Merlins seem to be selling more boats lately. Steve Rooster is latest high profile Merlin convert, I hope he will do well in the class. I've seen Mr Craig in Merlins, a certain Olympian in Merlins, there is a world out there beyond 400's. Enjoy the class for what it is, or try something else if you prefer. A lot of us will come back to the 400 as a great fleet. At least until the next I14 hits eBay. (been on the rioja, sorry) |

Thats a load of balls to be honest. Yes nylon absorbs water but depending on the type, only 0.5-2$ by weight and generally speaking this only leads to a change in size of about 0.7%. All this is partially counteracted by the fact that the nylon loses the water it absorbs as quick as it gains it therefore although it may absorb a miniscule amount of water from the air and even when you are sailing (maybe 1-3 hours a week) as soon as its in a lower humidity environment it will quickly return to normal. Nylon has been used in many classes over the years due to its low cost and easy machining capabilities. I personally wouldnt even blink an eyelid at using nylon for most applications on dinghies, especially if the coponents are designed properly to take into account the application it will be used for. If and its a big if, nylon causes you problems then a change to another engineering plastic such as acetal (delrin) would be a slightly less cost effective solution that would perform just as well. Dan Sources .....im an engineer that deals with many plastics from day to day in medical applications. |

No surprise there.
I suspect he'll struggle. The Merlin fleet is a lot hotter than the Graduate fleet.
He' sailed them quite a bit.

As i probably helmed this thread off track and towards what names people are given by their wives, maybe i can steer it back on track.
Maybe you guys can rattle your brains for redesigning a part of the 400. Probably since i first got in the boat one thing has nagged me. And its a lot worse with a new tapered pole. The "bow snappers" at best do an ok job. With a new pole with a dia that when retracted looks like a cocktail sausage in katie price's lady bits, even the best cut bow snappers leak water like a sieve. Add choppy seas and you get half the ocean discharging through your boat which a) ruins the sarnies and b) doesn't go to fast. The bow without snappers looks like http://www.kitesurfandski.co.uk/447/img00452-20110520-1706 and the snappers look like http://www.ldcsailing.com/rs400-snapper-2011-spec.ir?cName=parts-for-your-rs-rs400-hull-parts-bow-area Basically the elaccy goes through the hole up through an eye above the hole and then out the otherside of the hole, with the snappers tied on. the elaccy tensions it and they kinda mould to the pole. Until the pole changes diameter. The new pole requires a better cut snapper, but really the thing never worked well anyway. Now i stare at it in anger and thought maybe an old wetsuit arm would work well cut up and maybe glued on or attached with the laccy. but the problem is, when you pull the pole in. the neoprene inverts and gets sucked into the hole, jamming the pole and making you look a prat as you continue your downwind leg as everyone else rounds the lw mark. there probably is no better way, but its got to be worth putting it out there especially on a friday when everyones bored of reading about solos |

What about (without modifying the "snapper") putting something on the pole? A lot of the B14s have a drilled out tennis ball or similar near the end of the bowsprit. This has a twin function- it stops the pole retracting too far (which can cause damage to the inner end when it hits the mast step) and it seals (more or less) the bow. Would something similar be able to partly seal the snapper? |
