Something I thought was interesting, during the last National Ranker that included the Kite's, they all launched from the carpark half way along the Portland causeway. Presumably they can't launch from a 'confined' location like WPNSA? Good job it wasn't selected for the 2012 games. They would have had to close the entire causeway ;-)

interesting to see the current RS:X Men's gold medalist endorsing it.... I guess it's time to wave goodbye to windsurf 'board racing'.  If the athletes want change, so be it.

I can't see it being particularly good racing from a sailboat racing perspective, but if the advertising return on investment is better by having it in, thus safeguarding the other fleets I'll actually look forward to watching again, then whatever, 'dudes'.

I wonder if anyone's even bothered to do a risk assessment of Rio or checked it there is adequate launch facilities near the sailing site, free of overhead lines, up and downwind obstructions, wind sheer and other things kites don't like.

probably not... nevermind a dinghy park full of tall pointy things attached to (heavy, old) tubs.

Can anyone explain why, when the Starboard bloke was crossing in front of the Port kites, they didn't get tangled? Was the camera angle making it look closer than it was, or am I getting confused with where the kites are in relation to the boards?

Its frustating that its only really being put in for specator value or the "beachs" as the video refers to ?  Does Isaf really want kiteboarding under its jurisidition.

From a photographic point of view windsurfer's colourful sails framed the image of the good looking person sailing the thing. With kite surfing all you see is someone standing on a short board with some wires disappearing into the ether.

Rupert,
That footage was shown during a feature on 'Mainsail' (CNN) a couple of months ago. A great feature about Kite racing as it stands at the moment. The main man - the supremely named Johnny Heineken (his real name) was asked the question about tangling and his answer was: "I don't really know, it just doesn't happen"  Smile

google CNN MAINSAIL and look in the archives. I think it was August/September.
