Reflections of the weekend

The event

1.       Broxbourne Sailing Club did an excellent job and I hope that for future events we can receive the same level of hosting.  A wonderful welcome, great courses in difficult conditions (I have been reliably told that the wind was shifting a little) and perfect catering with bacon butties in the mornings and 2nds and, for some, even 3rds at dinner.  TBH, IMO, we could not have found a better club to host the inaugural FOM  Clap

2.       It is clear to me that I was not sailing in a fleet of armchair sailors.  The competence of all of the sailors was very high and rule observation was excellent.  It was a pleasure to sail in a fleet of such diverse classes with, it seems to me, everyone having a moment of glory near the front at some stage over the weekend.  We had a huge age range with competitors from 7 years old to G.R.F. at 77 years old (cheeky bugger put DOB as 1992 on his entry form, but this fooled no-one).

3.       It was nice to see so many different classes with extremes from the nostalgic Minisail (which escaped G.R.F.s matches by leaving before the Saturday evening festivities) to the amazing Punk and powerful X1.

4.       Best accommodation was the Pikeys and the worst, with the first frost of the season, were the tents.  Russ slept in his car and didn't even have Charlie to cuddle up to.  I have to say that we have some hardy souls on this forum.

5.       I was concerned about the sizes of the lake but, in hindsight, I think it was perfect.  It provided for great spectating (G.R.F. groupies please note for next year) and because the courses were compact all of the boats were in view of the rest with no issues of anyone disappearing over the horizon.

6.       I thought that the format of afternoon racing on Saturday and morning racing on Sunday worked well.  It allowed time for competitors to travel to the venue on Saturday morning and plenty of time to get home at a respectable hour on the Sunday.  Also, for the main event, 3 short races each day seemed to be popular with everyone.  The Saturday boat swap race was popular giving a chance for experiencing the pleasures of another craft.

7.       To summarise we struck lucky with the perfect host club, the standard of competition was high and, I think, we achieved the main objective of having fun both on and off the water.  It’s really how I remember dinghy racing years back before the heavy commercial  influence that we have in this day and age with so many jockeys dominating the events.  Of course instead of the normal written abuse some resorted to verbal abuse.  Thanks to all for coming and making the FOM such an enjoyable regatta with a special thank you to Mark who contributed beanies for all (much appreciated by those sleeping in tents), Pondmonkey for judging the Concours d’Elegance and providing prizes (James also seemed to have an endless supply of fancy dress or, perhaps he always dresses like that, we will never know).  Thanks also to Clive Eplett who contributed 3 copies of his amazing book CLUB SAILOR: from back to front, every club racer should keep a copy under his, or her, pillow.  The books went to Blaze720, 5th (to try and get on to the podium next time), Newake05, last of the fleet to get a result in all races (so that he won’t be last next time) and KeithF (to move him from mid fleet to the front half of the fleet next time).

Future

1.       The consensus of opinion is that we should do this again next year but, hopefully when it’s warmer.   Having said that we were really lucky not to have rain which as we all know can happen any time of the year.  I’m thinking September in an attempt to miss the major regatta season!

2.       My thoughts on criteria – Accessible (central and near the Motorway system),  camping, Saturday night bash capability, racing close to club for spectators, friendly club (not sure that we want to go to one of the big commercial clubs).   Does this sound like Broxbourne?  Maybe Burghfield next year?   I guess that the first decision is whether it should be an inland venue or on the sea.  I think that we need to look at a central(ish) venue which rules out the sea.  Another problem with the sea venues is that, due to tidal constraints, it would be difficult at many venues to keep the format of Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning racing.

3.       Stay with format of max 3 boats per class and maximum number of entries of 50.  I think that with more than 50 boats we will lose that ‘big family’ feel that we had at the weekend.

4.       IMPORTANT: Now is the time to make a decision and try and book a date.  All please let me know what you think so that I can put all sensible options into the hat.  I will consider all proposals and as is right and proper in a democracy I will then decide which clubs to approach  Wink

I think it would be hard to top Broxbourne's hospitality... but if we're chucking selfish journeys into the equation, with ample local accommodation then one of the Cotswolds Water Park clubs would offer a similar size pond and family feel.

What I learned from the weekend

1.       The Forumites are all excellent sailors, great fun and good company.

2.       You can have good racing and fun at the same time.  The banter wasn’t left on the shore and much continued around the race course.

3.       There’s a lots of nice boats out there.

4.       Remember to take my watch next time.

5.       To let the boom up whilst tacking.  Failing to do so left me speadeagled on the floor of the boat, out of control, nearly capsizing and almost hitting the mark.  Russ was just behind me and was so busy laughing his socks off that he let me slip away so maybe it could go on my list of tactics.

6.       Never give up!  In the last race I managed to get the first beat so wrong that the boats on my right and the boats coming in from the left were all ahead of me at the first mark.   I think there were 2 or 3 behind me only.  At that stage I resolved to retire when I got near to the clubhouse knowing that I had a lot of packing up to do but by the time I got there I forgot and went round again finishing a lucky 4th in the race.

7.       Count how many 1664s I have had as the evening progresses.  I lost count after 6 pints.

8.       Go sailing more than twice a year.

9.       Do this again next year.

Somewhere with draft lager, that bottled stuff gave me the hangover headache from hell and a bar in the changing rooms wouldn't go amiss for the changing room after party crew, us saddohs need a bit better service and take your smelly stuff out of the changing room please, sorry to whoever it was' wetsuit socks Russ threw up into, the boy just can't hold like he used to, or so he says..

Oh and don't let Thunder road near any form of alcoholic beverage in the mistaking idea he has of trying out for the Tom Cruise role in cocktail the movie, he sucks at it, the drink he made was disgusting, martini vodka, lemonade and absinthe it tasted like. I'm sure it was his 'cock tail' that ruined my racing on the second day, I came very close to winning Clive Ephlets book thanks to him, I had to use every thing probably written in it in the last race having fallen out of the boat still peeved at the top mark and none of you lot had the decency to wait for me again, I was lucky to take that young lad, he cheated anyway, going home early, not drinking and being young and fit, it should carry penalty points, I was lucky God moved the mark so he hit it and had to do some turns.

There also needs to be waves, those boys in that X1 that kept sailing over the top of me at the start need to be rolled by some white water at 20 secs to go and there needs to be tide to keep the pin end open, stop that Maxi Buddah shouting when I'm drifting down into him stalled out, 'tack off' he blubbered, tack off? I'm in this vacuum going backwards..

And all that shouting? What was that all about? There seemed to be lots of it going on up the front, if Mark wants to park his boat on top of the windward mark that's his prerogative, he was just re arranging himself, looked like the crown jewels had gotten trapped in his hiking truss. All that hauling up of spinnakers without front crew to shout at over the top of a gin and tonic, he was distressed.

Whilst I'm on, that Fraggle in the radial, such a Lady, putting up with doddery old gits sailing her past the mark and offering on the course advice and assistance as she creams past and I noticed she got in front of Lasernut on the odd occasion (Ban him, it is not right and proper in a fleet like that, that he should be rounding 2nd any more than that other unmentionable laser sailor winning every race in a boat no one can go straight out and buy.)

I thought Rockhopper thrashing his little girl with the knotted end of a rope in that 1st race on the second day was a bit off, just because I got in front of him for a bit until I fell out.

We need mental health professionals on hand to, poor Pondmonkey seriously needs help it's all very well us smiling, but if that was you, wouldn't you do the decent thing and have yourself sectioned?

Best moment? The blind panic on the faces of Mark & Russco when the results went up, you've never seen a pair work so hard when one particular boat got in front of them....

Next time, I'm going to get a proper sail for that boat that works in flukey, then we'll see

So that will be one with LOTS more sail and maybe an extra one up the front to make things even more confusing  then  ?? LOL  .... Why let Mark J.  take 'mark honours' on his own ?  I was not so sure of the course myself on occasion but at least we did not try to alter it ourselves.

Next time a couple of spot prizes including 'Best mark rounding' etc would be good.
