I dunno, watching the race today it seems a significant element of winning the F1 Championship is whether you get elbowed off the track on lap one by a mad Frenchman/Italian/Japanese/whatever. Do you guys think that maybe F1 should take a leaf from sailing's book and introduce redress?
There seem to have been plenty of incidents this year when a driver's score in a race or series has, through no fault of his own, been made significantly worse by physical damage because of the action of a driver who was breaking a rule...

Not really, remember they can generally only recklessly punt you off if their close enough. if we're referring to Button who was the most 'punted off' in this particular race he failed to qualify far enough up the grid and thusly got caught in the mid grid melee. Of course you could also point out that he was most disadvantaged by the yellow flags in qualifying...
But above all else it would be the canniest and wormiest can of worms that ever was opened in the history of formula one...

I've often wondered the same thing. I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. If there is enough evidence of it being someones fault to give them a drive through penalty if they have carried on then surely it isn't beyond their wit to give an "average points" or some other score adjustment to the one who is picking himself out from the wreckage and walking home.

Though I would suggest it would get can of wormsy if you tried to give some kind of reparation to someone who had to limp round with a tyre hanging off and rejoin the race after the mechanics had poked around the wishbones with a screwdriver. Live timing credits or something would end up with all sorts of problems. (Someone could even win on "corrected time" or something equally bizzare.)

You also don't want the situation to be that if someone punctures you it is best to stop the car, get out and claim your average points. Rather than limp round and try and come back by driving fastest.

It does seem unfair that a driver who gets drop kicked into a barrier by a lunatic in a Renault or Sauber gets no reparation at all.

The flip side of this is when a driver leaves the track via an escape route at a corner/chicane because of an unforced error. Whilst I'm not advocating that they should crash heavily into a barrier or kerb, if they had it would be game over. Apart from the time lost, which sometimes at a chicane is nil, should there not be a time penalty levied?

Automatic drive through or 25 second penalty unless they were judged to be taking action to avoid a crash or were forced off the track by another driver. They have former F1 drivers as stewards these days so should not be too much of a problem to police consistently.
