Any one got one of these, found you have to lift the main sheet to high to uncleat and found a nice easy way of lowering it. I've tried a slightly longer shackle on the ratchet block which has helped but i could do with more? Cheers Ian

fit a Harken cleat, still the absolute best for being able to cleat and un-cleat whatever the load on the rope IMO

I got a good deal on a Ronstan swivel base, which is adjustable. Works for me!

i suspect your answer is a vice, a DBH and some BFI, followed by purchase of aforementioned alternatives
(DBH - dirty big hammer) (BFI - Brute force and ignorance)

A lot of 400 sailors raise the block with an extra shackle or even two.
Usually lashings of tape to keep the block up right. Some use very big ratchet blocks. I considered cutting the alloy arm of my Holt jammer and bolting it back together, but the Ronstan swivel arm (RF7) was too good a bargain. As an 'off the wall' suggestion, I know someone who removed the bridge over the cleat on a the stand Holt arm, and bungee'd it central. I think he would move it into place with his foot if he wanted to cleat. I won't knock the idea, as he went fast enough. It's the most important control on the boat, so, if poossible, look elsewhere to economise. You could try cutting the jaws of the cleat down, so they are no deeper than the rope is thick. Not the most elegant, but a cheaper thing to try. |

Now that's a thought, thanks... I'll take a look tonight and see if that's viable. Ian

Can you turn the cleat upside-down so that you have to lift it to cleat the rope?
Pulling at the normal angle will release the rope.
