Irritating though it can be, you do have to allow for those occasions when you are watching the internet feed and the commentators have to do an update for one of the 'big' channels they will suddenly for no apparent reason start going over old ground. I think the main problem is that in most other sports with a relatively limited playing field you can see yourself what is happening for Sailing you are limited by what you can actually see on screen which is often very limited and/or at a funny angle... so you really do need commentatorial assistance as to what is going on in the wider picture.

I have loved the cycling coverage. I must admit that I had to Google for details of the Keirin and Omnium, but as with most viewers I am more than capable of looking up the details and then enjoy the high quality cycling commentary.

Why cant the sailing commentary credit the sailing viewers with the same intelligence? But the sailing commentary is overly dumbed down.

Any viewer is more than capable of Googling "Starboard tack", but "wind coming from the right hand side" does not yield the same results.

[try it - the former results in sailing rules of the road, the latter results in articles on trapped wind!]

So maybe we are doing the BBC a disservice?

Has anyone got in depth knowledge in other sports, that could comment on the way that sport's commentary is "pitched", as a comparison?

I still get annoyed by Rob "Creepy-Knob" Walker and Shirley "when I won my Gold medals.." Robertson.

I spent last week in Weymouth mainly watching on the big screen then Sunday on the Nothe.  Many of the other spectators at the screen were not sailors and from what I heard they enjoyed the sailing and found the commentary very useful.  I didn't find it irritating and thought they were doing a good job of explaining the sailing to the uninitiated.  Coming back to work this week most people I spoke to understood it well, so I'd say they're doing a good job.  As an experienced sailor I don't need a commentary and don't expect it to be aimed at me.

By way of example, we're currently watching the diving, and the Expert (Leon Taylor I think) has been brilliant, educational and entertaining (to a diving dullard like myself).  Has this really been the experience non sailors would describe from what's on offer?

Well I hope your not aiming your "arrogent" comment at me, I have tried to point out the difficulties and be balanced.

However I do believe you are incorrect in your assumption that the "masses" have been watching...

"I know what, there is no Chelsea v Arsenal game today so I'll pop over to BBC Olympic Channel 9 and watch race 7 of the Star Class" I bet those comments could be heard up and down the country!

More to the point is the likely outcome of not satisfying any viewers is that you alienate all viewers, pitch the commentary at sailors and sailors will watch, pitch it at a lower level and sailors will be turned off and you are merely hoping casual visitors tune in, is that really likely, I think not.
Identify your audience and give them what they want.

I recall him being on the showroom floor many times when I visited Banbury during and after the purchase of my first Laser in '88. He could also be seen those days on their Earls Court stand. Always very pleasant. His commentary seems no worse than those of other commentators from many sports who appear to be told to keep talking, even if there's nothing to say....  Ok if its radio, but such a turn off on TV. Strange how often the information they are giving voice to seems to be contradicted as they are saying it, by on-screen information they appear not to see.

Its not just the dumbed down repetitive drivel. Much of it is wrong.

no they haven't done a great job - the commentary is patronising and repetitive, and often misleading and inaccurate
