I'm not sure the 'home waters' thing is so important.  The Italians were already training at Portland the week we were there with the Wayfarers in 2010; I guess the other teams must have put in plenty of time there as well.  It's always different on the day anyway - or is on the Medway when we get uppity visitors who simply refuse to know their place!

Yes, ordinarily that about sums it up, except I've enjoyed watching the 49ers more this time, even though they have the tactics of cat sailors, there again, they sail bit like cats those things.

This was the Beijing medal table.
 Rank NationGoldSilverBronzeTotal
1  Great Britain (GBR)4116
2  Australia (AUS)2103
3  Spain (ESP)1102
 United States (USA)1102
5  China (CHN)1012
6  Denmark (DEN)1001
 New Zealand (NZL)1001
8  Netherlands (NED)0202
9  France (FRA)0123
10  Brazil (BRA)0112
 Italy (ITA)0112
12  Lithuania (LTU)0101
 Slovenia (SLO)0101
14  Argentina (ARG)0011
 Germany (GER)0011
 Greece (GRE)0011
 Israel (ISR)0011
 Sweden (SWE)0011

But that was a few years and a lot of money ago paid to a lot of allegedly highly skilled training staff, and we're on our home waters, you'd kind of expect we might do a bit better, well the bread knife does anyway. There will be more questions asked - at least when I get home tonight after sailing.. Wink

Finn - Gold, as expected delivered with some media frenzy that only Ainslie seems capable of commanding

Star - Robbed by a sh*te course in sh*te wind.  I think everyone would have accepted Silver to a Brazilian match race, but that Swedish win was sh*te, not Schiedt.

RS:X M - Silver - a good solid performance, could you really ask more with the dutchman on such form?

RS:X W - 7th, disappointing, but so close up the top there's no shame for Shaw; that's just regatta sailing, win some, loose some.

Laser W - Great performance by Alison Young and Annalise Murphy, very promising futures for us and our nearest and dearest cousins.  Again exceptionally close really.... isn't that what good tight competition should be?  Best GBR performance I can think of in this class isn't it?

Laser M - Injury, that sucks, but it happens.  Goody's interview with Penny Clark is hard watching, but explains the mood and the reality of competition at this level.

49er - medal race tomorrow- to be honest I've lost interest in the class once it became apparent the bet on ESP wasn't going to pay.  It's boring to watch (even the star is more interesting) and I can't imagine tomorrow will be worth switching on either, I've decided to do some work instead.  Ozzies win the 'Ozzie Class'... no surprise really.  Obviously I hope Rhodes and Morrison can monkey around enough to get a medal, but it's the sh*ts n giggles event.  Hopefully it'll blow like stink and they'll all fall over again, someone can drift over to win... give GRF something to get poetic over.

470 M - 470M are always strong, P&B are showing they deserve their selection by maintaining this tradition.

470W - a truly awesome performance, there's no background infrastructure with a past championship winning pathway- this is a whopping mix of raw talent, hard work and experience in the front end.... too early to celebrate, no way, even if they don't medal (unexpected now surely?) then they've smashed all sensible expectations out of the ball park already, a tremendous achievement by both sailors... legends.

Elliot- wish there was more coverage, I've enjoyed the bits I've seen

I agree with all of that with the exception of the Elliots.  I've found it very dull, both on the TV and on the Nothe in front of me - and I'm someone that loves match racing and partakes in team-racing.  Keep the Match-Racing, but change the format to mixed crews and the Olympic return of the Firefly and you've got a televisual winner.

The RYA have really done it now, the breadknife has decided that we should have done better in our home waters than we did at Beijing, notably excluding her nephew who of course would have won the Gold if he'd been allowed to windsurf for us, even though he hasn't exactly beaten Nick comprehensively just yet, but, she pointed out, that Dutch fella, who is he and where did he come from and why didn't those Laser boats get gold again.

So how do the Y&Y collective feel so far? Should we have done better, is it poor preparation, poor courses, the opposition just got better, or is our medal Tally going to be on a par with Beijing, (can't say I counted last time, but I'm sure we had more Golds).

Face it, it was a damn close run thing in the Finns, the Star's, were they robbed or was too much focus placed on gamesmanship, the 470's could turn it around or is that going to be a matchracefest, we gained a silver in windsurfing but lost Bryony's bronze, the Lasers failed to deliver, if the Aussies get gold in 470, then that'll give them what 3 golds ? Travelling half way across the World, to stick it to us in our own water?

What's happening here?
