When I write race reports I avoid outright fiction, but its probably fair to say that telling a good story comes a fair bit higher on the list than strictly verified historical accuracy.

no don't disagree at all.... besides when I snagged my finger in an Oppy when I was kid I was told to stop crying and that a bit of blood in the boat will make a man of me...

That's why I'd like to know.....but the view I take is that the rescue boat may take a decision that a competitor is too tired, light etc to right a boat...

But not that they must retire through injury (unless it's Ian Percy back injury spasming in the bottom of the boat stuff - which refers you back to my first point above).

I admit to having bled all over my boat (and others!) on occasion. But was the Lightning incident just a puffy finger with a bit of a cut.....or was it a big open slash that meant he couldnt grip very well? Remember the sea and wind state were not calm that day.
