How do you determine who is in the running for the chocolates? Do you pre-declare it, or wait until the final day, or after the 5th race??

The issue with swapping down is that you get the drag reduction as well, potentially offering a performance improvement as well as survivability. As to the general rig swapping concept would you have to declare before the championship? Not sure how it would work if half the fleet changed rigs in the middle of the event and suddenly all the 'non-swappers' scores DNFs etc etc etc would need adjusted for fleet size and the scoring of races where different parts of the fleet were included and others not and so forth. I haven't read the proposals mind so all of this could be dealt with and I'm just being silly. |

Well I no longer have a dog in the race, but to my mind the easiest and simplest solution was always to de-ristrict the entire concept- one class, one fleet, two, sorry, three rig choices... it's the reason I didn't protest rig switchers at the first nationals, I'd rather have another boat to race against and tbh, when fleet racing I rarely even clocked who was riding with what rig, maybe it's changed a bit since then, especially now the more obvious variation exists with the 7.4 and 10.2?
Free choice at every level is the simplest for everyone to get their head around on and off the race course, besides in practice not many sailors will be arsed to change at lunchtime and races tend to be back-to-back anyway. It would do away with the PY confusion as well, but that's a separate point, but yet again RS100 talk focuses on circuit sailing and not the club racing most of us bought the boats for in the first place.

I have since buying the boat new not yet managed to drag myself down south to race against other 100's as buying the boat coincided with kids. Hence all my experience with the 100 is club racing or regattas up North.
I was wondering given the fact the PY is the same for all rigs if that means I could swap rigs depending on the conditions. As it happens I only have the 8.4 rig but I would be tempted to buy the baby sail for howlers if I thought I could use it as the PY is the same.

Hi Keith
the PY you get given should be your club's locally adjusted value - and would probably reflect your results if you are the only one at the club. Dont know how much uptake there has been for the 7.4

The PYS is the same for 8.4 and 10.2 because the returns received by the RYA from clubs generally said "RS100" and did not specify the rig, what else could they do. The standard RS100 event SIs currently say you cannot swap within an event and across a series (ie travellers circuit) different rigs must count as a different entry. At your club, with identical PYS, I guess you need to discuss it with your Sailing Sec - in my experience most want their stats up and number of qualifiers not to get depleted so I'd hope they'd be relaxed about it personally. My idea, which I am not going to repeat here, was to encourage those less confident of surviving with their normal rig in a big blow (we had a bleak forecast and 4 races over 2 days of 20knots plus, 2 races in big waves but light then sensible breeze and 2 in the light/flat water at Paignton) to come along and enjoy some class racing and the craic, not stay at home, intimidated by the weather forecast. Yes it creates some compromises and quirks, but what the hell. I'd rather have a few more of the gang there sharing their love of the boat - its not the Olympics after all
